PET Scan - & Yes I'm Going to Beat This !!!

21,228 1,397 June 19, 2012 at 10:06 AM in Chat
I'm going to have a PET Scan done, and they gave me a list prior to the night before of what I can and cannot eat. Has anyone ever had a PET Scan done before?

I'm curious as this list of what I'm able to eat and not able to eat is rather odd to say the least.

The evening prior to the study eat a meal that is high in protein, such as fish, meat, chicken and eggs. Do not have any bread, pasta, rice or starches such as corn and potato's. Do not eat foods that are high in sugar content, such as desserts. Only green vegetables are acceptable. I'm able to drink plain water plain water after midnight, and the morning of the test.

So I'm trying to figure out with fish, meat and/or chicken - what I am able to add to a meal the night before Dontknow right now - maybe because my mind is a little boggled with everything I'm going through - and I'm trying to prepare ahead of time for this, to get the right foods in the house. I have meat and/or chicken to make the night before. The only thing I can think to add to this is a large salad (for greens only) but would have to leave off many of the usual things they put into the salad where I would normally order this from, onions, tomato's, crouton's, cheese, etc. So I guess I would need to ask for just a plain salad with cucumbers in it, as those are the only "green item" they put in the salad, unless they have broccoli which they could add as another "green item".

I don't eat peas, asparagus, or things like that Yuk So any suggestions for me?

Anyone been through a PET Scan, and had to follow this dietary restriction before?

I've read up on what it's all about and what they will do that morning, putting the dye into me, to see what "lights up" - so I get it, and understand that certain foods will give a false positive on this - hence the restrictions.

Help would truly be appreciated Embarrassment

And, last night I found out I'm able to tolerate "Boost" to drink this to try to gain some weight back - didn't think I would be able to tolerate it - as I had it 26 yrs ago and it tasted like Yuk But apparently they have repackaged it and reformulated it - so it's better tasting than it used to be. It used to be packaged in aluminum type cans, which made it down right awful Sick Now it's in plastic type bottles, much better Thumbup Very, very Vanilla is my choice right now, until I get so sick of vanilla laugh out loud Everything I've been trying has been vanilla - as I don't do chocolate, and I'm afraid to try the strawberry right now; until they run this test on Friday Frown

You have no clue what this is costing me in the way of co-pays OMG
Friday's will be $400 alone, for that test EEK!
We are going to be hemorrhaging co-pays, or should I say we already are at this point;
but we have no choice right now.
Since a PET Scan is the gold standard for testing, I cannot image what the cost will be for that, until I see it go through my Insurance online.

Is Ensure in plastic bottles as well? I didn't know they made different types of it, rather than just the "off the shelf versions", that is interesting Scratchhead and that your plan covers this; that is great; not cheap stuff Nono

My PET Scan is now scheduled for Monday, don't know what time yet; the doctor has to do a peer-to-peer review with my Ins. Co. for the authorization; but they told me it will be approved, this is just a formality at this point; they have the time, but where it was when they called me was "locked up" laugh out loud So they have to call me back with the actual time for Monday. So it looks like I'm eating this special meal Sunday night. Wow, things are moving along quickly aren't they wootwoot

Here's to pulling an ace on Friday, which is what I'm praying for, as I'll have one up my sleeve to thrown down for that test - as I want better results Big Grin Just one doctor for one test, to give me something a little more positive - I'll take just one, please Pray

Tomorrow morning is the MRI, more of a formality than anything, for another look see at the kidney; and I'll get my hands on that report on Thursday; because I'm demanding Girly Seems there is some duplication of tests going on, but I can't stop it - since there are so many different doctor's involved now Frown

Maybe I'll just ask him for some pasta dinners to be shipped to me, along with different special sauces he makes, and to ship them special to me. Think that would work Scratchhead I wouldn't mind someone doing some cooking for me, and carbs are good for me right now Whee Whee

Hi sweet Picca hug

I had a PET scan of my brain but I don't remember having any food restrictions. I was in the hospital at the time of this particular scan, and I really didn't eat much of anything during any of my stays so I'm not sure about the food. The radiotracer was specific to the brain so maybe it was different Dontknow

Either way....let's get some good results!!!!!! nod

I've decided....you and I are walking radioactive lunatics Rock
You did, but they turned the machine up too high. That's why you don't remember.

Probably because of the Euro or the metric system....

Would that cost $3,000 for a man?

I found this article on Livestrong. Apparently, it's a low glucose diet that you need to follow. Pray for great results

"Positron emission tomography, or a PET scan, is a type of nuclear medicine imaging that views the body and organs on a cellular level, according to RadiologyInfo.org. A PET scan measures body functions like blood flow, oxygen use and the metabolism of glucose, or sugar. Depending on the type of PET scan you have, following a low-carbohydrate diet 12 hours before the scan may be necessary to increase the quality of PET scan images. Foods you can eat are limited for this type of PET scan."

Hmm never heard of this but:

"If the biologically active molecule chosen for PET is FDG, an analogue of glucose, the concentrations of tracer imaged then give tissue metabolic activity, in terms of regional glucose uptake"

I guess that would be why they don't want you eating candy bars right before.
