(NO OT) - DIY: Inexpensive Bracket for Anyone w/Radar Detector, GPS, Scan Tool or Anything Windshield Mounted

10,827 3,722 September 12, 2012 at 01:31 PM in Autos
I wasn't sure where to post this since there is no DIY or How To section on SD but I've posted this 'deal' on many automotive forums that I'm on and it's always been well received. Mods: If there is someplace where this fits better feel free to relocate it there. SD needs a DIY sub-section maybe?

I made a bracket for my radar detector to mount to the rear view mirror rather than the stupid windshield brackets w/suction cups. This same device can be used for a wide variety of things such as GPS devices or engine monitor readouts. The cost is anywhere from free to $2.50 depending on if you ride bicycles or not. It's a simple seat post reflector with the reflector removed. Most have these in their garage and if not you can get them at your local bicycle shop for a few bucks at most. When I went to mine they gave me handfuls of them of various sizes for free just for asking. You will also need a small bolt with a matching washer & nut to attach the factory bracket to it. There are a couple sizes so pick based on the thickness of your mirror stem then use padded tape to make up the difference. Pretty simple actually.

I figured this is a perfect post for those Slickdealers like me who think $90 or even $35 is WAY to much for a simple mirror bracket mount.

Enjoy!

My rear view mirror fell off. I think it was from sitting in the heat of the Georgia / South Carolina Sun (yes, they have their own).

It's an easy fix - you can buy a kit for like $5 at some auto repair store. All you do is
1) scrape the old residue away
2) clean it with an alcohol wipe
3) apply adhesive
4)hold tight for a few minutes (time & pressure, baby)

Be careful, you own a GM product and that extra weight will bring your rear-view mirror crashing down.

Come to think of it, on Chevy's, the weight of the mirror alone will bring it down.

Neat idea, but I've re-glued too many mirrors on GM trucks to hang anything off the mirror.

Years back I accidentally knocked the mirror off an old Audi 200 and a small thin part of the windshield came off with it, so I would have been happy with GM glue that time.

Someone answered "not a good price" and another one "unable to replicate deal". laugh out loud

So what you're saying is that if your mirror isn't properly affixed to begin with it can fall off w/o any additional weight being added to it and you even had this happen to you several times. Interesting.

Had one fall off on a 90 454SS and a 85 K1500. And once it starts, the glue from Autozone etc. only lasts about couple of years approx. With no additonal weight attached.

Yeah, those kits suck. I still fail to see how that has anything to do with this thread. That's kind of like crapping on an oil deal thread because you're '85 K5 threw a rod bearing once. Not really the oil's fault if the manufacturer can't put things together properly. This thread is all about an inexpensive alternative to the $90 mounts being offered that do the exact same thing. Those in the market for either of these already understand the dangers.

How is mounting to the bottom of the mirror smart in terms of visibility? Seems like it would be line of sight in the way. mounting on windshield allows you too put it lower such that it doesn't block your forward sight
