Which one do you guys think I should get? I was thinking about the Gold for $1200 per month but my BIL suggested I should go with the Silver cuz it's unlikely we would ever use the high cost care/procedure. So, that would save us $200 per month or $2400 per year.....about the cost of the $2000 deductible for one person.

I have family who are M.D.'s. Whenever they see any specialist in the area, it's basically free because they all know each other. When I go to them (if I choose to do so outside my insurance network), they usually won't charge me because they know I'm related to the M.D. they're friends with.

For example, if I want to have lasik done, I can go to several good lasik surgeons in my area who will do it for me for free. A few years ago when the economy was better, they would even do immediate family of other doctors for free!
But, I think it may be a case where it's fellow doctors in the area who all have private practices. Because, they refer to one another.

I'd like to think that I would feel like an ass if I accepted that kind of favoritism when I could afford to pay my own way.
I only started noticing it 10 years ago because that was when I had to start buying my own insurance on the individual market. I was in my mid-20s in 2002, and I paid $80/mo for a Kaiser Permanente plan that covered literally everything for a $20 copay and no deductible. I was outraged at the time--my copay under my parents' plan had been $5, so I thought I was getting owned!
Then every year from 2001-2010, my premium went up double digits. Usually 15-25% per year. The only way I could afford to keep coverage was by constantly downgrading to increasingly worse plans. I actually was thankful when my premiums only increased by 10% in 2011 and 2012. This year, my coverage was: $4000 deductible, nothing covered until deductible is met, after the deductible, most stuff is covered...at 30% coinsurance.
