Exchanging gifts with in-store credit ?

It's been a while since I last did this, so I wanted to confirm if stores like Walmart and Target still do this .. Can you exchange brand new retail stuff for instore credit at either Target or Walmart ? If yes, are there any requirements, conditions or limits that I need to meet ?

Also, I do not have the original receipt of the item I will be trying to exchange.

Thanks for clarifying guys. I've read people on SD doing this and I always wondered it's okay, but I guess not everyone knows that this is fraud.

I've exchanged at Target before w/o receipt but this may vary between stores so YMMV. Not sure if there are exclusions on certain types of products.
