Mind you I am not a professional but I am at the point now where I have bought and sold enough cameras with the big brands to realize that realistically most cameras made in the last 5 years, probably longer with good lenses will get you great photos. I've printed out a ton of photos in the last year and most of my favorites were actually with my APS-C Canons. I think for someone at my level probably an 80D is the best camera out there. I will say even though Nikon especially the D850 weren't on my radar, if it gets low enough I could definitely see it as a possibility. I bought into the Sony full frame hype and it's okay, but it's been almost a year and there isn't a single time I have held my camera and not hated how it feels and I wish had a Canon in my hand instead, not a single day. lol

Eh, I went mirrorless and I could go back to DSLR tomorrow with no issues.

Right now this is true but I feel 5 years down the line, most new lenses are gonna be made for mirrorless systems. Imo if you're starting to invest in a system right now, it makes sense to buy mirrorless.

To get the best results, you need to be mindful. It's not about the camera being automatic-everything. Canon DSLR's, especially the 7D and 5D models, are just amazing to work with. They fit your hands right, you don't have to fight them to set them up the way you want, controlling shutter, aperture, EV, focus point, focus stop/start, and ISO all with your right thumb, without taking the camera from your eye, is all doable and fluid. I love shooting with them; it's pleasurable and let's me concentrate on what's important in the image.

Funny I have not read his Cannon stuff, I have read a bunch of his Nikon articles and he does come across as a fan. Personally I think he is enthusiastic about photography and finds things to like about all the equipment he has.

I'm getting back into photograohy after not doing much with it since college, from what I have read I think he is a good amature resource, though professionals may have a different opinion. The reality is you can learn art from many different sources, but you only use what works for you.

Conversely, I went from shooting an a7r/a6000 combo to shooting an a99—and there isn't a single time I pick up my camera and I don't think, "Do Really want to lug around my DSLR-sized camera today?"

I love what the a99ii gives me in performance and IQ, but the e-mount bodies with a 55 1.8 are just so light and good. It is only a matter of time before I switch back.

That said, the D850 is arguably the best all-around body in the world and is a bargain at this price.

nobody wants a bigger camera, "Photographers" only put up with bigger cameras because they want the resulting image quality. I would prefer it if my camera rigs were only one ounce.

DPReview, I trust, but Northrup has proven himself to be a clown many times. His photography is low level, and essentially a product pusher. When he goes on rants on cameras, you start to get a sense, that he really doesnt have too much field experience or that he doesnt pick up on nuances very well.

that's more of a gut feel than anything. I'de like to see what folks at LR would say about that. I've got hundreds of thousands on my A9's E-shutter, any of the mentioned cameras would be on the brink of failure by now. Having a solid state camera is better than a bunch of moving parts. There's a timelapse photographer on youtube with 5 million actuations on the original A7s? No DSLR can match that sort of durability.

The D850 is a fantastic camera and if you have use for it you really can't go wrong. I ultimately chose to go with a Z7 but still rent the D850 on occasion because the focusing system is fantastic for sports/wildlife...and the Z7's just isn't there yet. There are definite advantages to the Z7 though which is why I ultimately went with it. Not having to chimp shots, video work, smaller and lighter, etc.

Shutter durability is one thing, but structural integrity of the body is another. Lots of A9's failing structurally that I've seen on the Sony group Facebook pages. The build quality of the a7 series isn't even close to the flagship Canon or Nikons. Perhaps the a9 is similar to the build quality of my a99ii... but still not on par with 1DX, D5 or D850.

But I'm not going into a war zone or climbing mountains with my body, so an a7 series would be just fine. I loved my a7r, even in spite of the bad AF.

Yeah, the D850 does seem the current top of the heap for DSLRs at the moment and I don't know anyone who doesn't love theirs, and I am in the boat right now of trying to decide which system to switch to. I currently have a bunch of DX nikon stuff. I've been leaning toward a Sony A7 III, but man one big problem is that the sensor does seem to get dusty, constantly, I've read this in many reviews. I guess a draw back of mirrorless, but part of me wants to just pick up the D850, but I also don't want to go buy a bunch of FX nikon lenses when I know the future is likely the Z series for nikon.

Yes, the future is the z series...but they'll be much, much more expensive compared to their f mount counterparts. I'd be looking at probably 2800 for a z mount 85 1.2. You can get a copy of the f mount 85 1.4 for 800-1000 used if you look around. Will the z mount be better? Definitely. But 3x better? Eh. Pricing seems to be trending upwards.

It's wonderful to gain insight through these comments, but we seem to forget that one can have a body of a Ferrari and a Toyota engine would not do any justice. Please do spend money on a good Len and the D800 or D810 will change the way you view your photo taking abilities forever. It's day and night, and we are not talking about the hundred dollars lens.
