So what are the cons? It's not thin, nor light. The camera is hot garbage to me, but the wife uses it for Zoom and hasn't complained yet, so there's that. The screen is ... meh. I mean, our phones have better screens, and I'll bet a $150 phone might as well. At first I was concerned about the 4GB of ram, but honestly, it hasn't been a problem YET. I'm sure, in the future we'll have to revisit this. I would like an ethernet jack, but it's hard to tell because they only use them in the house and we have good wi-fi. If we go on vacation, it might be a different story. Also, 128GB of storage is nothing these days. You will run out fast if you have a lot of media. But this problem isn't exclusive to this particular model, as the majority of laptops are in the same boat. So add the cost of external storage (SD card, external drive, cloud) to the overall price. Finally, the battery life is not good. You'll have to pay more to start getting decent longevity.

I bought this cable from Amazon: https://smile.amazon.co
The description says -K200, the product photo shows a label on the cable that reads -K210
The cable was delivered just now. The label on the box says:
"SATA Cable for 320-15 330-15 NBX0001K210"
Lol.
The cable has the -K210 sticker on it, so I'm unsure if this is what I ordered... or if it's NOT what I ordered.... or if will even work.
The photo on the Amazon listing shows a purple SATA connector. The other cable listing has a black SATA connector. This one is black, but it has the sticker that the purple cable shows, and Blushift's photos of the working connector is also black.... so this is confirmation that it's the right one... or it's confirmation that this is the wrong one. Lol.
Sometime after supper I'll give it all a try. Frankly, I don't know if this is going to be a slam dunk or if there's no possible way this is the right item.
Google: using phone as webcam
Often our smartphones work well as webcams.
I cracked the laptop open.... man, what a pain in the butt. Even with the soft-tipped tools I've used for laptops and smartphones, it was a bear to get it open without damaging anything. A tip - start in the center of the beveled edge (the edge nearest the space bar). If you can get something in there to start to open it up, swap in something thicker like a guitar pick or credit card, then slowly work your way around, leaving the hinged side for last. Once the front and sides are loose, the hinge will release without anything snapping off or getting damaged.
The cable from Amazon (the cable-of-confusion from my previous post) worked fine. Thanks Blushift for your photos and your recommendation to loosen the battery to run the cable underneath. What I did was this:
1 - loosen the JHDD1 latch by flipping it away from the battery
2 - place the data cable generally where it will be sitting when we get done - HDD connector next to the HDD cage with the proper side up (meaning the cable will be coming from the bottom edge of the connector), and careful "fold" of the cable in the "up" and over direction to align it to the JHDD1 jumper)
3 - holding the blue tab on the cable, slide it into the jumper and close the latch. On my cable, there's a black line that will roughly align with the jumper. If that line is NOT parallel to the jumper, try again.
4 - Remove the three screws holding the battery in place. Lift it slightly - you do not need to disconnect it from the laptop if you're careful and you don't want to.
5 - Lifting the battery's upper left corner, maneuver the cable beneath the battery so that the connector is clear and near the HDD cage. Put the battery back, and screw it down.
The HDD fit directly into the cage fairly snugly, so I've opted to skip removing the cage to screw the drive into it. I have no worries about it moving around inside the cage whatsoever.
I buttoned everything back up and booted. Windows didn't see the HDD, but I brainfarted and forgot to run Disk Management to initialize it. System Properties could see it, but Windows didn't know what to do with it. That's fixed.
So.... the cable works.
Now to grab a 16GB stick and a cheap webcam-that-beats-0.3MP

Our machine is the 81WA (IdeaPad 3 14IML05). This is confirmed on page iii, so this is the correct HMM for our system, though the layout of the internal parts differs a bit from the diagrams shown.
Removing the back is on page 28. (The four screws on the beveled edge are shorter than the other six)
Removing the battery is on page 31 (Our battery is not as long as the one shown, it has only three screws (not 5 as shown), and the HDD cage is in the same place but is rotated 90 degrees from what's shown
Removing the memory module is on page 40. Our machine has NO module in that slot, so to install just execute the instructions backwards to make one appear.

But I unable to find them on Amazon or ebay, might be in the same boat as the SATA/HDD cable, different part number than listed.
I have been using the PQI Fingerprinter readers on all my devices for Windows Hello and Roboform authentication, could buy one for this laptop too but the USB port is on the left hand side so a little awkward
For those interested in buying the PQI Fingerprinter Reader from Amazon

Does anyone know if the M.2 SSD slot can work with a SATA SSD or is it just compatible with NVME SSD?
(I understand the slot might fit a B+M key SATA SSD but will the motherboard see it?)
If it does work with a SATA SSD will it disable the HDD SATA?
It looks like there are several compatible models...
I found 5D10S68975 for $75 shipped. If I can find it shipped under $50 I'll test it out.

Also added the 8GB RAM module. Recognized it and now have 12GB. Still need to run some memory test, but I don't expect any issues.
Still waiting for Amazon to deliver the SATA cable so I can install the SATA SSD into the empty bay, and then I'm done with the hardware upgrades.

But if you do it, I'd be interested in hearing about the process and the results.
