- frustrated with the general lack of responsiveness in the controller
- impossible without being able to quickly maneuver multiple turns in succession. literally both of them won Mrs Pacman tournaments at their local arcades in their day)
- You didn't say how the controller is connected to the puck... if it is via Bluetooth (the default), connect the controller directly to the puck via included USB cable and hold down the P2 button until the blue Bluetooth-connection lights on the controller go out. This will ensure you are playing "wired", as opposed to connected via USB but still using Bluetooth. Doing this made games for me like Galaga where I'm used to timed button mashes much more playable
- The Ms Pac Man tournaments, presumably on stock Ms Pac Man cabinets, had 4-way gates on the sticks. This controller has 8-way, which makes it more difficult to play maze style games (put joystick in 12-O'Clock position and slowly go around outer edge, you can feel the eight positions). Look into installing a 4-way gate (try $7 SANWA GT-8F 4/8 Way Restrictor Plate Gate JLF Series as recommended by another user, after looking into how to install it) and this may greatly improve Pac Man games
- Make sure picture mode on TV is in "gaming" mode if there is one
Got it and hooked it up without issue and was playing.
Big problem tho... it is just not responsive enough to be enjoyable.
I had several different people try it out, all without telling them I had an issue with it. I let them play and give me feedback. All of them were excited to play it and each person tried a couple different games and while all initially were having fun for a few minutes, all of them, in short order, became frustrated with the general lack of responsiveness in the controller. For example playing games like burgertime and the generic packman game were atrocious. You could never get the guy to turn when you wanted him to, forget about trying to make 2 quick turns in succession. Needless to say getting all the toppings or eating all the pellets was impossible without being able to quickly maneuver multiple turns in succession. And for sample size of people who I tested with - it was my wife and I, both my kids (13 and 11), both of our moms (they were both Mrs Pacman pros themselves when they were younger - literally both of them won Mrs Pacman tournaments at their local arcades in their day) and several of our friends also tried it out.
I really wanted this to be awesome. But in the end the overall lag in response times from the controller caused more frustration than enjoyment. This product has been returned.
I could never justify spending any amount of money or time on modding this or buying more games as it is just unacceptable to use.
- Use it until it breaks and buy the Pi 4 when your core conks out.
- Don't do any firmware updates until it is not doing something you really need it to do
- Put an inline power switch on your USB cable.
Given the low end hardware my gut is leaving it of when not in use may be the better play than letting it just sit, but i dont have any thermal data to support that, just a gut feel. Just know it is not likely to last and there is a good chance it will break in a way that is not recoverable.
It will work sometimes but usually when large games try to load, the screen turns black, the main game list shows briefly, black again and then CoinOpsX simply gives up and returns to the main menu.
If I had to guess, the recent firmware takes more system memory and CoinOpsX struggles to find the ram it needs when loading large games. Things worked much better before the update at least.
I find it quicker to simply load the games via the BYOG menu and forgo CoinOpsX altogether. If you sort your game rom sets in separate folders in the UCE folder on your USB stick (Make sure there are no spaces in the folder names), loading from the BYOG menu is not too bad and games load much quicker. As it stands, CoinOpsX is just too slow after the recent firmware update and I find the BYOG option much more efficient.
Overall I'm finding it difficult to enjoy this product. I like the idea, but the implication of its set goals and intended purpose are executed poorly and the system simply doesn't have the power to run things smoothly IMO. (Delay in controls, poor emulation, and CoinOpsX performance being terrible ECT.)
I'm seriously considering returning it but I want to try local BYOG streaming functionality [atgames.net] before I do. In theory, I can install CoinOps on my PC and stream it via the ATgames puck. This will eliminate all of the slow emulation and loading issues as my PC is more than powerful enough to run everything smoothly. Now I just need to find the time to do this...
I mean for me all the games are playable, but I am used to getting very high score and actually "know" how to play many of them. Yet, I seem to fail early and die often and I feel its due to delayed response. For example, many side scroll shoot them up/side, adventure type game, there's noticeable lag. Jumps aren't precise and difficult to manage, while you can train yourself to time it better by adjusting to preemptively jump early/hitting button earlier, you CANT react fast enough if a monster surprised you and you need to respond. Many single hit and die become much less enjoyable.
I found this game kiki kaikai to be a good test. I can get to the stage 1 boss, but can't seem to pass him before I get frustrated enough to give up. the movement is lagged just enough, and the single life aspect makes it painful to play.
can you do well in the game kiki kaikai if you claim your response is fine?
i am using Samsung FIT Plus USB 3.1 Flash Drive 128GB - (MUF-128AB/AM), (kiki kaikai is a stock atgames game, so all these are irrelevant) no hub, and tried both wired and wireless.

I was convinced the problem was the software of puck; after connecting it to MAME on a PC, the improvement was felt. So on PC, it plays perfectly as it should. When you press the fire button response is as instant as pressing keyboard input.

I was being optimistic (with the potential causes being a usb or hub etc) for everyone who fell in love with the entire Atgames package, and still don't notice the tiniest bit of lag that we have mentioned. It's mainly a problem with the buttons X,Y, A, B, etc. The joystick or trackball don't have as noticeable a lag. The games seem ok and playable the first few minutes you play them and it's exciting giving coinops a spin. But eventually you notice it when games get intense and you need to perform in beat'em up fighting games, shooters, etc.

I've got a Tankstick and Pi4 still in box, just been too lazy to set them up so this LGP is perfect for my lazy butt.

These at 99 on clearance are fine, but at full retail microcenter is clear winner and a pi 4 is way more capable.
