$400 sounds like a solid deal.

The longer answer answer is that, yes, Klipsch speakers aren't what they used to be. But that doesn't mean they're bad either. Klipsch has been making speakers since the 40s and have always been known for using horns to increase sensitivity and make them easier to power. That mattered a lot more back in the day of tube amps than it does now though. In the late 90s Klipsch launched the Reference series to better compete in the growing home theater segment of the market as well as get their speakers in box stores. The original Reference series was met with mixed reviews, but largely respected. In 2011 Klipsch was bought by Audiovox and the entry level Icon series was rebranded as Reference and the old Reference series became the Reference Premiere. This defiantly watered-down the brand and led to a lot more negative reviews of the Reference series. All of this to say that, Klipsch has a lot more diversity in both price and sound quality in their current three-tier catalog than they did 50 years ago. That's a good thing though as if opens up a lot of more choices for buyers on different budgets.
Getting back to The Fives specifically, they are basically a powered version of the Reference Premiere bookshelf speakers, so they fall firmly in the mid-tier of Klipsch's lineup. With that said, the only reason I'd really recommend getting The Fives at this price is if you want the simplicity (theoretically anyway) of a HDMI-ARC connection. If you don't need that you spend half this much on a pair of Edifier speakers without any loss in sound quality. Or if you just prefer the Klipsch sound (some do) then the older model, The Sixes, are still available for around $500, just without HDMI-ARC and a larger cabinet. I like The Fives, but when it comes to bang for your buck it's hard to justify them even at their current sale price.
