So after seeing your comment, I did a quick google and there is supposed to be an ultimate edition coming out this summer. So thanks for mentioning it. I'm going to wait and you saved me $60 that will go toward that ultimate edition.

Spielberg eventually apologized for his special edition ET with the walkie talkies instead of guns and the most recent releases went back to the original. I don't think they kept the updated space ship effects, but might be mistaken on that aspect.

As for Indiana Jones, they did some minor VFX cleanup on the recent 4K release, mostly erasing things like matte lines and small errors (such as the reflection in the snake pit). But nothing on the level of Lucas and his Star Wars changes.

Some movies I think it is OK to buy again and again. Although with 4K streaming services, I think 4K bluray will be the last mainstream disc source for the mass. Unless everyone has 120 inch 8K TV that can distinguish 4K vs 8K, 8K will likely not be widely popular, maybe only for collectors. Hell, even now, DVDs sell more than regulary bluray.

Well, I'm not really talking about messing with the FX a la Han Solo shooting Greedo, but things like cleaning up compositing. If you can get past the weird revisions, Lucas did make several changes that are objectively better. Cleaning up matte edges, things like that.

The recent 4K Indiana Jones set has changes like this, where they cleaned up compositing and fixed some technical issues, but no changes that really affect the story at all. Even a limited cleanup like that is pretty rare. But I can think of almost no examples outside of Star Wars where new CGI has been added/modified for a re-release, and keep in mind Star Wars got more theater revenue alongside it. There's the original Star Trek series ... I'm sure there are others but nothing else comes to mind.

Assuming Peter Jackson even wanted to update the VFX (and he doesn't seem to be the kind of person to stew over the imperfections in his creations like Lucas does), I'm sure the numbers just wouldn't add up to pay CGI artists huge money to improve the VFX for a 4K release on a dying format. Unfortunately.
