"tl;dr - the 980 runs cooler, since it's not got that DRAM cache, and it will write 20GB a whopping .6 seconds slower than the 970 EVO Plus and 1.3 seconds faster than the 970 EVO. 980 is hands-down the SSD to pick. Details to follow if you're interested:

tl;you're STILL going to read? OK, here ya go:

Here's a rundown on how you would perceive the speed difference between the 970 EVO and the 980. At these verified _maximum_ transfer rates - if you are writing a 20 GB file okay? WRITING a 20GB file (assuming the source drive is not a bottleneck, i.e. is equivalent for both), the _theoretical_ elapsed time for the different SSDs is:

The 980 will write that 20GB in ~6.7 seconds (at 3000 MB/s)
The 970 EVO Plus will write that 20GB in ~6.1 seconds (at 3300 MB/s)
The 970 EVO will write that 20GB in ~8 seconds (at 2500 MB/s)

Which is to say that the differences would normally not be perceived. When considering that the 980, without the DRAM, is generating less heat - which matters - I would definitely go with the 980 for better heat management and a $20 savings over the 970 EVO Plus (2021-05-16 prices). You're only losing .6 seconds for those frequent huge file writes, heh.

20 GB is easily 3 to 5 full-length videos, in HD, or more - in under 7 seconds! Crazy.

Yep, go with the 980 with lower heat and wave goodbye to the .6 seconds... Ehh, probably not enough time to wave - wink goodbye. ;-)

As far as downloads - I cannot conceive of a situation where these SSDs will have ANY effect upon the speed. Period. Even on a super-fast broadband connection, the network is going to be the bottleneck. We are not quite getting multiple GB/s on typical broadband service. Typically, even a SATA drive at 550 MB/s will surpass most broadband download speeds, substantially even - most of the time."

dramless, expect entry level performance.
The random r/w seems to be better than the 970 Pro, but everything else seems to be worse

In case anyone else gets tricked like I did, this drive is basically an entry level performance unit, dramless. Samsung is piggybacking off the naming scheme reputation to hock these basic drives to unwitting consumers.
They are taking advantage of the new Chia coin miners

Bought the 500GB 970 Evo for this price back in December, and after that product was discontinued, finding it at this price was impossible. So I imagine this is an even better deal. If it's anything like the 970 Evo, it's great to store games on.

Sata should be fast enough for that year MacBook Air. I'm no expert I'm just assuming that a 2017 MacBook Air m.2 might be overkill if you have a i3 or something.

Remember when a 500GB SSD was a lot? Now it's on the entry level Xbox Series S.
Some people still use 1.44mb floppies.

FYI, Here is a good kit for M.2 mounting screws as it doesn't come with one. Pretty good size variety for only 5 bucks!

It's only needed if you lost the screw(s) that come with the MoBo.

Yup, or if you bought a prebuilt / secondhand / used / etc... that didn't come with one in it.

I think this is good for a fast boot up
There's a part of me that continues to want one of these, mainly because my PC has the slot and it's empty. I'm not sure how much of a benefit the speed would provide compared to my SSDs, but I suspect it would not be significant enough to justify the purchase until I require more space.

This would be good for a hackintosh boot drive since I don't want to waste the spare 2TB 970 EVO Plus.

Deals on anything PC related have gotten so bad. Paid the same for 500gb WD Blacks nvme drives last year. What ever happened to that hp nvme drive that was around last year? 500gb of that was going for around $50 as well. 3gb read 1.8gb write and had dram. It's not as quick as the blacks but seems to have the same or close sustained performance for large writes.

with discover card deal makes it a bit more casual purchase. I was holding off until 4.0 become more available, but at 55ish shipped it is not expensive, non-committal purchase lol

I have WD nvme as my primary drive with write speeds of 2400mbs. So i dont think it has dram, so does anyone think getting this to use as the primary would increase speeds/performance?

if you OS support HMB (host memory buffer), then you won't see much, if any tangible difference.

that said, HMB requires OS drivers and what have you, if you using some unix/linux system, you may just be SOL.

with that said, the 970 EVO PLUS are HOT, i can see why samsung wants to do something to reduce temperature.
