Huge difference. I have a fire stick which is now on the playroom TV for the kiddo to watch Disney+/PBS, but the Apple TV is a significant upgrade in UI. On top of that, if you have iPhones or iPads, being able to cast/screen mirror or use your phone as a remote is pretty cool too. Also, Airpods can pair directly with the Apple TV for wireless audio (I use this during football season so I can watch/listen to the game while cleaning up without blasting the family)
Like others have mentioned, it's a big difference.

I housed to have fire sticks all over the house since they were cheap, but then I noticed that they began to have issues with some apps as updated versions came out (despite me staying up to date on all fire and app updates).

Main thing for me was that I wanted to use the Spectrum app, and Amazon fire stick wouldn't let me use it properly, kept having issues where it wasn't supported.

As an iPhone user, I like to easily screen mirror what I was watching in my phone onto the tv all through the phone.

Lastly I really appreciate being able to use my Apple remote as my all-in-one remote where I don't need to touch my soundbar and tv remotes.
Doubt it

You prefer Roku, enjoy your Roku. You like Apple, enjoy your Apple. Choice and freedom to choose are good things.

I've owned both, I prefer Apple. Why, is nobody else's concern.

Don't be that guy, I have a co-worker who is 100% an Android guy and even he says the eco system is great but won't buy apple out of principle.

Haha, not hating on Apple. They make great products and have a great ecosystem. But the up charge on their products is downright criminal at times and makes me laugh when user try to justify the price in comparison to other alternatives. A roku ultra does just about everything Apple tv does, dolby vision, Bluetooth, headphone jack for private listening, even a nifty remote finder, and of course air play and home kit support. The only thing inferior to Apple tv is the voice search isn't as intuitive and maybe no support for Apple music. Other than that, it really makes no sense spending $100+ for an $170 apple TV when you can get roku ultra for $70. If you don't need dolby vision, then the $30 roku stick does everything Apple tv does too.

I can get a better deal on the previous model, but does anyone know if the new one really offers me anything over it? I'd be using it to stream mainly Disney plus to our Older JVC projector using the Apple TV's built in HDR to SDR conversion since the projector doesn't handle HDR properly. I've been holding off and waiting hoping the new model was going to have tone mapping capabilities like the Panasonic UHD players do, but it appears they didnt change the HDR to SDR at all on the new model.

I use a Harmony Ultimate, so the crappy remote may not even be a concern.

How fast can the UI really be? My FireTV 4K stick transitions and loads super quickly. I've literally had zero problems with both of our FireTVs.

Our household has two iPhones and three iPads. We're big fans of Apple products. I also have a ten year-old PC that, with a new GPU, still plays modern games and works flawlessly. Our PC laptops have also lasted us for long periods.

So, while we both like our iPhones over previous android and Blackberry phones, we can't see spending SO much more on ATV and their computer options.

I legit can't figure out the difference between those two, and I've read the internet explanation probably dozen different times. I'm just dull-witted I guess, also physically slow as in bodily movement.

As for this Apple TV? If I was rich Apple person, sure I'd buy this. However I would have bought it at full price right when it was released (because I'm wealthy Apple buyer). As for cost to performance? I'll stick to $25/$30 Firestick 4K (regular sale price).

He does have a point and how does "wasting money" have a "different dynamic", isn't wasting money wasting money regardless on what it's on?

To his point you are/have probably "wasting money" that cost you much more than $179!

The "that you can still do all those things for less" can apply to MANY things!

What car do you drive, where do you live, what clothes do you wear, what display are you watching your streaming on, ETC!
Pretty sure you "justified" what you bought and it wasn't "wasting money" and conveniently makes it non "peeve" scenario! 😎

So it's not really about a real "pet peeve" on "wasting money", it's more about you "choosing" to make this an issue and calling it a "pet peeve" on "wasting money" 😜

No it's different. You can by X for 100 less. But you choose not to because of marketing and instead spend an extra 100 on X with a nicer label. That's needlessly wasteful. It's not even the same as just spending money on something you don't "need" it's spending money on something you don't need plus being stupid about it.

To the ridiculous karen comments by another. You can of course spend your money on it. I don't control you. But out of the spirit of saving money and not wasting it...which is something this site is kind of based on...I recommend not spending your money on Apple products because none of them are worth what Apple is charging. You are just paying for their marketing budget.

Well there is the problem it's not a "pet peeve" about "wasting money" it's just you don't like Apple.
If it wasn't that then you would comprehend it's all the same not different. The problem is for some reason you think you can define the "worth" of something to EVERYONE!

I'm guessing you don't hold yourself to the same standard because I guarantee you whatever TV,car, clothes, home, etc you have/using...... You could get something "that you can still do all those things for less". Pretty sure you have your reason(s) why you don't buy the "less" expensive one!

Since you are doing some "recommending" here is some for you:
Since you have this "pet peeve" condition about how money is spent, I would "recommend" you look in the mirror 1st before telling anyone else what something should be "worth" to them.

If for some reason that doesn't work and your condition worsens you might consider not coming into these threads and read them, will save you a lot of embarrassment!

Nope. Apple is just the subject currently, it is a pet peeve when people waste money. Which it is a waste of money. It's not a better product by any measure. So that's the end of it.

I don't need to look in the mirror as I try my best to educate myself before buying something and as such I never buy Apple TVs.

I definitely probably have something I have wasted money on that I'm not aware of. But it's only because I'm not aware of it. Not because I know wasted money and willingly did so. (although there are some opportunity cost/supply demand scenarios where couldn't wait on shipping etc. Those could be considered wastes in the end. But really it's irrelevant. If you don't want the free advice that you are wasting money buying and Apple tv. Then feel free to not take it or listen to it. If people never offered advise many would never learn. I'm trying to be helpful in your buying process and offering better information. Motivated by my annoyance with wasteful spending. Sorry you got your panties in a twist about it.

If you want to talk about wasting money, ask me about my Chromecasts I never use that are plugged in 24/7. Ask me about my 2 x Fire TVs that are collecting dust because they suck. Ask me about my 2 x Samsung TVs with the built in apps that I don't use, and ask me about my slow Roku's that are collecting dust in a box. All the ADS in all of them were also so annoying
So don't preach to me about wasting money on this. Apple TV is the only one that we actually get our money's worth out of
