I housed to have fire sticks all over the house since they were cheap, but then I noticed that they began to have issues with some apps as updated versions came out (despite me staying up to date on all fire and app updates).
Main thing for me was that I wanted to use the Spectrum app, and Amazon fire stick wouldn't let me use it properly, kept having issues where it wasn't supported.
As an iPhone user, I like to easily screen mirror what I was watching in my phone onto the tv all through the phone.
Lastly I really appreciate being able to use my Apple remote as my all-in-one remote where I don't need to touch my soundbar and tv remotes.

I've owned both, I prefer Apple. Why, is nobody else's concern.

Haha, not hating on Apple. They make great products and have a great ecosystem. But the up charge on their products is downright criminal at times and makes me laugh when user try to justify the price in comparison to other alternatives. A roku ultra does just about everything Apple tv does, dolby vision, Bluetooth, headphone jack for private listening, even a nifty remote finder, and of course air play and home kit support. The only thing inferior to Apple tv is the voice search isn't as intuitive and maybe no support for Apple music. Other than that, it really makes no sense spending $100+ for an $170 apple TV when you can get roku ultra for $70. If you don't need dolby vision, then the $30 roku stick does everything Apple tv does too.
I just bought the new remote.

I use a Harmony Ultimate, so the crappy remote may not even be a concern.

Our household has two iPhones and three iPads. We're big fans of Apple products. I also have a ten year-old PC that, with a new GPU, still plays modern games and works flawlessly. Our PC laptops have also lasted us for long periods.
So, while we both like our iPhones over previous android and Blackberry phones, we can't see spending SO much more on ATV and their computer options.
As for this Apple TV? If I was rich Apple person, sure I'd buy this. However I would have bought it at full price right when it was released (because I'm wealthy Apple buyer). As for cost to performance? I'll stick to $25/$30 Firestick 4K (regular sale price).
To his point you are/have probably "wasting money" that cost you much more than $179!
The "that you can still do all those things for less" can apply to MANY things!
What car do you drive, where do you live, what clothes do you wear, what display are you watching your streaming on, ETC!
Pretty sure you "justified" what you bought and it wasn't "wasting money" and conveniently makes it non "peeve" scenario! 😎
So it's not really about a real "pet peeve" on "wasting money", it's more about you "choosing" to make this an issue and calling it a "pet peeve" on "wasting money" 😜
No it's different. You can by X for 100 less. But you choose not to because of marketing and instead spend an extra 100 on X with a nicer label. That's needlessly wasteful. It's not even the same as just spending money on something you don't "need" it's spending money on something you don't need plus being stupid about it.
To the ridiculous karen comments by another. You can of course spend your money on it. I don't control you. But out of the spirit of saving money and not wasting it...which is something this site is kind of based on...I recommend not spending your money on Apple products because none of them are worth what Apple is charging. You are just paying for their marketing budget.

If it wasn't that then you would comprehend it's all the same not different. The problem is for some reason you think you can define the "worth" of something to EVERYONE!
I'm guessing you don't hold yourself to the same standard because I guarantee you whatever TV,car, clothes, home, etc you have/using...... You could get something "that you can still do all those things for less". Pretty sure you have your reason(s) why you don't buy the "less" expensive one!
Since you are doing some "recommending" here is some for you:
Since you have this "pet peeve" condition about how money is spent, I would "recommend" you look in the mirror 1st before telling anyone else what something should be "worth" to them.
If for some reason that doesn't work and your condition worsens you might consider not coming into these threads and read them, will save you a lot of embarrassment!

I don't need to look in the mirror as I try my best to educate myself before buying something and as such I never buy Apple TVs.
I definitely probably have something I have wasted money on that I'm not aware of. But it's only because I'm not aware of it. Not because I know wasted money and willingly did so. (although there are some opportunity cost/supply demand scenarios where couldn't wait on shipping etc. Those could be considered wastes in the end. But really it's irrelevant. If you don't want the free advice that you are wasting money buying and Apple tv. Then feel free to not take it or listen to it. If people never offered advise many would never learn. I'm trying to be helpful in your buying process and offering better information. Motivated by my annoyance with wasteful spending. Sorry you got your panties in a twist about it.
So don't preach to me about wasting money on this. Apple TV is the only one that we actually get our money's worth out of
