Chromebooks have inferior speakers, build quality and keyboards, have no Touch ID, are typically lower resolution, run on relatively hot and weak Intel processors at best, have relatively short battery life and I believe are generally limited to running web browsers and what are basically Android apps. And user privacy is not a thing.
I have both this MacBook Air and a Google Pixelbook Go. I'd say the Pixelbook has the better keyboard (not backlit though), much better speakers, a better battery life, and never runs hot. The Chromebook is obviously limited on what it can do, but wanted to point out that not all Chromebooks have those shortcomings.

Best Buy would not price match
Same experience here. Spent 26 minutes on the phone, most of which on hold while the representative "looked into it", to be told that since I already bought at "such a discounted price", there would be no price match. I said I would just buy a new one and return the more expensive one, and she said sure, you can bring it back to the store. What a waste of money and resources for Best Buy to end up with all these open box laptops instead of just refunding the $50!

Edited to add: post typed up on the MacBook Air that will be returned to Best Buy after the new cheaper one gets delivered on Friday laugh out loud

Update: I ordered last week for the higher price. Got into a chat with best buy and the agent credited me $50+tax.

Agreed but that Chromebook is also $650 and while I'm not knocking your choices, I'd never pay more than $300 for something running that limited OS. Admittedly haven't used them in a few years when I was working in a different school district but they effectively did nothing very well at that time.

Got it for $799+ tax last Sunday. Chat rep said they can't take out the difference. Since it's a student deal. Is that true?
Usually they're pretty lenient on chat. However, you can always play hardball lol. I'd order the cheaper one and then return the one you bought last week if they are gonna give you a hassle. Company's so-called "price protection" policy are there mainly to keep them from having to deal with excess returns from customers exercising their rights to the lowest price during their allowed return period. It is simply easier to refund the difference, customer retains the same product, no open box item to discount and customer is happy. Win-win really. I had an assistant manager at my local BestBuy refuse to honor a $200 price drop a week after I bought a TV once so I ran home, threw it back in the box, returned it at full price and bought the exact same thing for $200 less new in box. Haha, the silliness of her dickish attitude and her own ignorance of her company's own policies clicked when she saw me come back haha. Anyhow lol, easiest just to try chat again and see if you have better luck first… but don't take no for an answer… price protection policy is print right on the back of your receipt!

I definitely wouldn't make the purchase again, but I just needed it for online classes and loved everything about its design. Even the little things like the "one-finger open" and how it doesn't slide around when you open it (my only complaint on this MBA).

I have a Surface Pro (2017) that probably will be needing the screen replaced soon. Is this a good alternative, especially for someone who is starting graduate school? I already have a ipad and an iPhone so I'm already in the ecosystem. I also have a PC so this would mainly be for when I'm traveling and have to do my school work away from home

I have been playing with the Samsung Galaxy Chromebook (v1) for a little over a week now.. granted it's intermittently. We also have like 8 macbook devices in the house (mix of airs and pros for work and pleasure) and a crazy number of windows devices.

So far, for $310 the Chromebook is a glorified web browsing system with a 4K touchscreen. Macbook airs (2015+) outperform the chromebook in all but one way. You can draw on it and touch the screen.

Okay, the 4K screen looks amazing in some youtube content as well, but I am really struggling to keep it even at that price. It also has touchID (or whatever Google calls it).

I bought one last week for 1k

I did return an open box I bot for $750 after a fudged price match but the warranty only had 6 months

my logic was that the $250 for the 6 months extra warranty would be worth it in the end

My understanding is the only difference this gen is MBP has a fan and the touch bar , MBA doesn't. Thermal videos show a few degrees Celsius difference under stress tests and benchmarks but not really significant. M1 runs really cool and external temps on both units never got over 40* Celsius from what I saw.

Edit: Everything I've seen has said MBA is the better purchase this Gen unless you do photo editing or want Touch Bar.
Hi, thanks for your response. I checked on the apple website to compare and it looks to me the difference is just speaker, microphone, battery size and a couple things that you had mentioned.

But I am still lost about the 2020 iMac, MBA and MBP all has the M1 processor... so wouldn't all of them perform about the same, if not similar? Like all the devices should be able to do the same task, without showing any lack in performance? This the part that kind of hold me back... since I do want a powerful personal laptop (for time if i want to do any video/photo editing, or anything that the 2020 iMac 24in is not capable in doing smoothly).
