These portables with USB power are not shuckable because they lack a SATA interface. You probably could DIY an internal cable solution using a USB header on your mobo but it's not worth your money or effort.

The shuckable ones are the desktop models with separate power supplies and standard 3.5" drives inside. AFAIK capacities range from 6TB to 14TB. Plenty of discussion about CMR vs SMR, helium filled drives, etc. on the drives contained within. These are worth shucking because they are often cheaper than the internal drive alone.

This drive is not shucking friendly. Soldered usb connector to the hard drive and its SMR too. If you know what you are doing, you can make it work, but it's meant to be a bit of a pain/expense on the connector issue. Keep in mind SMR drives are not great for array use either.

I have this drive and also the 5TB WD Black game drive. I have the game drive connected to my PC full time and the Easystore connected to a Series S. Some might argue that I should switch them, but the game drive is only marginally faster (125MB/s vs 130MB/s).

TLDR: I think this drive is suitable for both of your use cases.

sorry I wasn't clear... I was already attracted to this deal at $90 so at $76 it's more attractive

i haven't been watching for internal drives but had noticed probably due to pandemic prices have gone up... $90 is what I believe 5TB portables were going (when SD) for 2 or 3 years ago

As others have mentioned WD passports aren't shuckable since the USB board is soldered to the HDD.

IIRC Seagate and Toshiba portable drives are still shuckable
