Is this a good deal? I see it for $50 on AppleTV but not sure if there's a difference between 4K and 4K Ultra cuz AppleTV shows it being 4K only?
4K=UHD=ultra HD. Discs are better than streaming, but streaming isn't bad. Comes with digital 4K code so you can get both with disc purchase.

I really want to get it but its hard to justify the cost when I got the 8 Harry Potter 4k film from BB for 70.

Yes if you want to pay $230 for it. Depends on what you want I suppose. The $230 set comes with a "nice" case. A ring replica and some artwork cards. Also comes with the Blu Ray version of the movies instead of just the 4K. I am only interested in the 4K versions and the digital codes so getting them all for half the price of the box set is the way to go for me.

They could have done a much better job on the "Ultimate" set in my opinion. The case is ok but for these movies it should have had a better "Ultimate" version than what was released. I would have been tempted if it came with a statue or a cool box kind of like they did with the wood Game of Thrones box set that was released. Basically something that would stand out and look good on the shelf in my movie collection.

I would add it's supposedly gonna have extra bonus content whatever that means. Not sure how much more it would add over the BD version which I already have and is pretty extensive.
My guess is it won't be worth the price.

I do agree with you, had they included a cool figurine to encompass the trilogy like say Aragorn & Arwen kneeling and bowing to the four Hobbits or say a cool 3D map of Middle Earth you could frame I would have strongly considered it!

Is the 4k transfer good?

The upgrade makes them look like whole new movies. The HDR/Dolby Vision is nuts and it sounds great if you have Atmos.

They did a huge upgrade on these movies. The HDR makes them look like whole new movies. If you have Atmos, it sounds amazing.

This is technically 9 discs. 3 movies, but two versions of each.

Well... should I get this set.... or not?
I do have the extended trilogy on DVD. I'd love the 4K resolution, but this set has no extra material BTS.. which become the minus points

Oh, man... Frown

Well much depends how important those "extra material" are.

If it's very important then maybe going after the BD EE version makes more sense.
Especially if you have a budget display & sound system.

If that were the case I would recommend getting the Panasonic 420 player.
It's HDR processing and upscaling is top notch and the best IMO.

DVD to BD is a decent jump in PQ & AQ, that player will make it even better IMO.

I have to admit, I'm still sore about Tom Bombadil. Plus, I just don't enjoy this nearly as much on rewatching - the only scene I like to see over and over is the Balrog Scene "You Shall Not Pass!" - and the subsequent battle. I should probably edit each movie down to 15 minutes for rewatching. I'm easily distracted, though, so anything more than an hour and a half is a chore for me.

Anyone have experience with the digital viewing? I don't have the 4K UHD Blu-ray player. But would love to see the movie in 4K

While disc is of course better, I have these digitally in 4K, and they still look and sound fantastic. You can usually get the trilogy on sale for $30 on Vudu or iTunes.

Nope. The PS4 Pro does not have a 4K blu-ray player.

Thanks. Just bought for my 7.2.4 system. 140 inch screen. My son turns 12 in a few weeks and I'm going to introduce him to LOTR with this.

4K is 4K Ultra and UHD and any other name you'll see it as. Companies made things so confusing for a lot of people by saying 4K, 4K UHD, 4K Ultra HD, UHD, etc... It's all the exact same thing. It's just different marketing.

Looks amazing, I watched all 3 on an OLED and it looked like watching a brand new 4K movie. Looked and sounded incredible.
I watched them on a low end TV (a TCL series 6 from 2018) and was still blown away by how great they looked and noticed so many new details I'd never seen before. I can't imagine how great they must look on an good OLED.

Yes. Last year I watched the Hobbit movies on Blu-Ray and they looked great. I then started to watch LOTR on Blu-Ray, but it looked pretty bad (77" screen 7 feet away) so I didn't even finish the first. Watched the LOTR from the 4K discs and it looked great.
