Truth. I've heard there are some good fan edits that bring it down to a single 3 hour movie that reflects that book and removes the cringe. But haven't had a chance to see if I can find them.

For this trilogy, I'm really tempted. Can anyone who also has the Blu-rays comment on whether there's a significant video or audio improvement here?

I heard there was a box set that was coming out with even more additional features from the extended edition. Has that come out already or was that just a rumor? I've been itching to rewatch in 4K.

It's coming out later this month and includes the theatrical and extended release of The Hobbit as well. From what I can tell, the new extras are mostly cast/crew interviews/reunions from some Alamo Drafthouse showings of the film. The set has an MSRP of $250, so much more expensive than this set. For me, the new extras and including The Hobbit don't justify the price difference.
