If you're already on at&t this seems like a great deal.

Usually: 1) unlimited plan is needed for theses deals. 2) 24 month commitment isn't for everyone
Neither of these are true.

For 1), national retailers can deal with all regular and standard plans. Very old plans, "non-standard", rare plans may have problems. I've done both AT&T and Verizon non-unlimited plans w/o problems. YMMV for a very small minority but everyone else will be fine.

For 2), this is not a contract and is in fact a free 0% loan. FYI, old-style 2-year contracts are contracts, more recent installment billing (no bill credits) are 0% loans in the customer's favor, and new T-Mobile style reversal contract 2-3 year bill credits promotions standard across the industry nowadays are scams to the carrier's advantage (and actively harms you)

Obviously they wouldnt just give you a free phone without switching to their service...you guarantee you'll be a customer for 3 months with all that 180 going to their service costs, you get a free phone.

They used to give out this phone for 49 with port in but now they want you to pay for 3 months.

Will this work with my post paid ATT sim?
I'm pretty sure the answer is yes, and that's what makes this deal slick when you buy this phone for less at the at&t store (only 1 month of service required)...imho

TL;DR it is not worth the $100 difference.

The 2 year (or 3 year) commitment is actually true. If you're wanting the sale price, ATT rations the discount over the 2 or 3 years as credits. So, if you leave early, you end up paying the remaining of the balance in full (no more discounts).

Can this be used on Consumer Cellular? I used prepaid ATT phones on it years ago, but don't know if it is still okay.

Just from a value perspective, I would recommend the iPhone 11 over this. The difference in battery is day and night. You wouldn't think this was a big deal but even staying home during the pandemic, I realized its value. Of course price is not all that comparable.

You've just described a Early Termination Fee with declining severity the longer you've gone through your contract... Bill credits are as bad if not worse than old-style contracts by any other name and every carrier is happy to shackle you to one. The bonus to them is suckers can't tell and morons on T-Mobile will happily shill for them while getting screwed by their (un)carrier.

Thanks for the info. I'll save ~$50 by doing this rather than buying the phone unactivated. I'll buy the phone @ $149.99, pay for 1 month @ $50, and then cancel autopay, put a Red Pocket GSMA sim. The phone will be $199.99.

Not free. You need to pay 3 months of service in advance @$60 per month.

Yes. But you dont need to be on $60 plan. There are slickdeals posts in the past that explains how to change to 30$ plan. So 180$ can be used for 6 months of service. But that only helps if you plan on switching and staying on cricket for 6 months. So either this at&t phone vs cricket with 6 months of service. If latter works the most for you then cricket may be better option.

Just know that it's extremely YMMV finding a Walmart with a wireless section that:

A) Has the ability to properly activate prepaid phones using their WARP system
B) Understands and can actually locate this specific promo in their system

In a lot of documented cases these are the biggest hurdles. In some cases they're able to get the managers to agree to a price adjustment (and in less cases, they wind up getting the phone without having to pay for the airtime). I tried 2 Walmarts near me and the most success I had was getting a price adjustment, only to return it because they didn't properly activate the phone. In the end I just went home, paid full price, and had it shipped.

If you can deal with stipulations of having an ATT locked phone for at least 6 months, it would be better to "sign up for a new service." It was $150 + $15 service + $30 monthly plan and I was able to cancel the plan as soon as I got home. I already had the $25/8 gigs a month Att prepaid deal so I was only out ~$200 for the new iphone se. YMMV but the sale rep told me that you can get the $150 deal at the Att store with a $30 plan when he looked at the system
