This is what I **was** thinking, however after reviewing the release history, I don't really think waiting makes much sense. Here's why:

This is the Shield Pro release history --

2015 - original release

2017 - seems like the only thing they changed was the form factor, a USB port or two, and the remotes

2019 - upgraded the processor sightly, added upscaling, greatly reduced storage size, removed microSD port, removed the IR remote / receiver, added Dolby Vision & Atmos decoding.

In other words, instead of giving a legit across-the-board upgrade, they took a bunch of stuff away, gave a couple new things, and set themselves up for another baby-step-upgrade in 2021 or 2022 (maybe.) My personal feeling is that based on the upgrades & downgrades they've made, and the fact that no other manufacturer's are really competing too aggressively in the Shield's tier, I fully expect the next upgrade to be completely underwhelming, and riddled with the same "upgrade this, downgrade that" nonsense as last time.

In other words, I'm not sure it's worth the wait if you want a Shield. I also don't recall if the 2017 even went on sale when they 2019 was released. If it did, I don't think it was much of a discount.

Same. I need that 4K 60FPS AI upscaling that only the pro has.

I'm looking through comparisons and they all seem to indicate they can both do the 4K upscaling.

If you have AMEX card with points there is a Amazon promo where if you pay with points you get 50% off up to $60 + 5% CB so I got my Pro other day for hell of a real for under $145.

The Tube is the same price at Best Buy (the Pro is not on sale there either Frown )

I opened my Chase mobile banking app and saw that they had a Best Buy promo where they will give you a 10% credit up to $25 for a purchase at BB before December 2. I used that to make my own discount on the Pro.

For anyone else looking. YMMV. Only $15 and $30 off for me

Just fyi, current shield hardware is pretty old (2019) at this point and doesn't support HDMI 2.1. No clue when/if they are planning on releasing a new version, but I think it would make sense at some point since they haven't abandoned these and are still spending money to update the software.

To my knowledge both support 4K AI upscaling but the base version is limited to 30 FPS content while the Pro supports 60 FPS which is important for stuff like YouTube TV. They did mention they were looking into the possibility of making it work at 60 FPS for the base model but I don't think anything came of it.

Please don't buy this. It is much slower and laggy compared to the pro. To the point where it would slow down during a 4K video stream on numerous occasions. My old shield from 2015 never had this problem. I upgraded to the pro 2019 model dot-dot. Yes at regular price unfortunately... It is an absolute pleasure now to use my home theater as it was intended. Easy.

Not to mention how laggy the interface is during normal operations
