This is what I **was** thinking, however after reviewing the release history, I don't really think waiting makes much sense. Here's why:

This is the Shield Pro release history --

2015 - original release

2017 - seems like the only thing they changed was the form factor, a USB port or two, and the remotes

2019 - upgraded the processor sightly, added upscaling, greatly reduced storage size, removed microSD port, removed the IR remote / receiver, added Dolby Vision & Atmos decoding.

In other words, instead of giving a legit across-the-board upgrade, they took a bunch of stuff away, gave a couple new things, and set themselves up for another baby-step-upgrade in 2021 or 2022 (maybe.) My personal feeling is that based on the upgrades & downgrades they've made, and the fact that no other manufacturer's are really competing too aggressively in the Shield's tier, I fully expect the next upgrade to be completely underwhelming, and riddled with the same "upgrade this, downgrade that" nonsense as last time.

In other words, I'm not sure it's worth the wait if you want a Shield. I also don't recall if the 2017 even went on sale when they 2019 was released. If it did, I don't think it was much of a discount.

This thing crashes constantly when trying to play 4k content on plex. I know multiple people with the same issue. No issues at all with the old version of shield.

I've noticed that some of the Dolby Vision content (Netflix, AppleTV+) looks washed out on this.

It doesn't happen on Roku Ultra or Fire TV 4K.

I have the 2017 and love it, but had to abandon it for Dolby Vision. I want to get a new one but am wondering if anyone knows when a newer version is coming out.

Shield is the only streamer that supports lossless 7.1 audio (dolby and dts) but this version seems to be too slow and needs to be avoided.

Have one 2019 pro and will pick another if there is sale on those.

Please see this before purchase:

Listen to the several people in this thread who are saying this is bad. Its not bad on day one or day two, it goes bad eventually. Reddit ShieldTV Thread is full of the Tube going bad. For most of us it took over an year.

If you want Shield, go with Pro, not with Tube.

If you want to play 4k files via plex, get the pro. I've had this thing for a year and just can't get it to work consistently with plex. All other streaming works fine. I switch to a new Apple tv4k because I didn't want to pay $200 for a pro and didn't care about the gaming features. It doesn't have upscaling, but it's the most stable streaming device I've ever owned and plays all plex content just fine.

Same. I need that 4K 60FPS AI upscaling that only the pro has.
I bought a Shield Pro last year because of the 4K upscaling. It's still ironing out a few kinks. It didn't work well with low resolution textures when they were moving. So you'd get noticeable sharpness on fabrics and furs so long as they were still but then they'd turn into blurry messes the second they moved. I also had issues with color profile on my LG OLED being super muted and I couldn't do anything to fix it. It's also a known bug with the Shield devices.
