ADL is more power efficient than Zen 3 in actual desktop application use:

It also scales to lower power much better than Zen 3:

You can reduce the peak power of the 12900K by 40% and lose only 8% of the peak performance.

Even down to 35w

You can pair it with DDR4, even 3600 cl16 in gear 1 pretty much matches any DDR5 out currently. Buying a Zen 3 CPU currently unless you already have an x570 or B550 is pretty silly. The DDR4 MSI z690 board for $210 is all you need to get pretty much all the main features too.
Sigh...

Why would anyone be wasting money on a perfectly reasonable build around DDR4? Not everyone is running the latest and greatest so upgrading into DDR4 makes a ton of sense for value-oriented builders.

DDR5 is not a huge upgrade right now and you could easily go with DDR4 now and wait a couple of years before jumping into a mature DDR5 ecosystem...
DDR5 is going to get way faster by the time you actually want to upgrade your motherboard again. It happens with every new iteration of DDR. The best move atm is to buy a DDR4 board, save the money then buy into DDR5 when it is mature, faster, and notably cheaper. It's not even a big upgrade over DDR4 at the moment.

Alder Lake power consumption is laughable running full-tilt but it does outperform Zen 3 now. But where are you going to find DDR5 to pair with it??

PSA, there is now 69 super ships with 420 cargo containers full of ddr5 sitting offshore waiting for the smash and grab fad to end. Ddr5 will be plentiful soon, don't support the scalpers.

There are DDR4 Mobos for it. I ordered the ASUS TUF mobo to use with it.

The mobos are the same for integrated or discrete graphics. The CPU however is the one that either has integrated graphics or not so you have to watch out for those instead.

Look at the DDR4 vs. DDR5 benchmarks for Alder Lake. You can probably get away with using DDR4 in most cases.

Raptor Lake should be supported on the DDR4 motherboards as well, so there is an upgrade path.
