nice tv, can't stand the google platform on tvs though, prefer the simpler/cleaner roku style.
I bought this when it was 899 for the 65 inch.

I agree the Google TV is still in its infancy as a built in OS, and it's crashed on me a few times already, but this TV is brighter and supports HDMI 2.1, so already pluses over the Roku variant.

I bought a Roku 4k stick to replace the OS, set up CEC, and now my roku remote controls the power, the OS, and my sound bar.

Only thing I need is to change inputs, in which I just yell for google to do for me.

$30 fix to an amazing TV

If I were you I would set it up. The OS has it's glitches, and the last update made a mess of the HDMI eARC/ARC feature. I'm actually getting mine exchanged due to that issue. If the problems persist, I might return it and go for the Roku model, even though I've heard the Google edition has a better picture.
Oh I 100% intend to I've just got a lot of cleaning and other stuff to do before I set it up haha. I'll probably get around to it this weekend. It's supposed to be a fantastic tv aside from the Google os which I won't use.

That's debatable. Technically it kind of Is. Theoretically most people I know say the tcl has better quality control than Hisense (and tcl isn't a premium brand so it's got its own QC issues). Either way you probably can't go wrong with either. I will say the 55" version of the U8G is flawed. The 65" version had motion issues that were fixed but the 55" version hasn't or can't been/be fixed. Both tvs rate very similarly.

The R646 is one of the brightest TVs out there according to rtings.com. This is my primary interest in this tv for my bright office and living room.
It also has good contrast ratings.
Many issues with panels but you can't get this brightness anywhere near this price

I also picked up the 65" version of this TV on BF. Unfortunately when I turned it on there was a small black dot towards the bottom of the screen (about 1mm in diameter), where it appears that one or more the mini-LEDs is burned out. It looks like a bug on the screen or a piece of dirt or a small shadow.

Question is: do I return/exchange it (can do so through Jan 16) or just leave it? It was a huge pain to get it home from the store. I'm thinking of maybe buying the Geek Squad Protection, and then after a couple of years (after the TCL warranty expires) asking them to fix it and possibly get a new TV out of it...

Right? I've been crushed by this. I got the 700 deal for the U8G but this is super tempting.... I'm super torn cause I was excited for the brightness of the U8G but the clarity of the TCL was awesome. Google TV also has me a bit worried since adjusting settings seems difficult as well as the bugginess.

Been waiting for the 65 to go back to 900, wound up price matching the U8G to BB for 898.
Got the 65 for 799 off Amazon and received Wednesday. Deal lasted maybe a day, but should come back after Xmas I'd think.

BB will exchange it, no questions asked. They will also setup a time to drop off the new one and take the old one away at no charge.

Hmm. I have the HiSense 65U6GR (HDMI 2.1, 60hz) ordered for delivery later on. I have a PS5 but honestly I don't think the 120hz matters much since I play mostly single-player. It'd be important mostly for FPS multiplayer. Most AAA titles that aren't multiplayer will be 4k60 locked for best graphics.

Is it stupid to buy a TV meant to last through the PS5's lifecycle that doesn't support 4k120?
Depends on what matters to you. If you want better future proofing on a purchase you aren't inclined to make again for a long time, seems wise to plan for a good lifecycle. If keeping more money in your pocket now is a priority, don't second guess it
