Since Ms. Killjoy brought it up I'll give my opinion from personal experience.

Main difference is DV and the extra adjustments with "tone mapping modes" are more for people that like to tweak their PQ, example are PJ owners.
Since PJ's can't do DV the 820 is way overkill.

The 420 processes HDR better than any player in this price range(it's the same as the 820).
Since DV is dynamic HDR you get whatever the transfer of the movie gives you.
Depending on that transfer, the HDR processing on the 420 can rival a movie with DV.

The bigger difference is upscaling to 4K, the 420 does that even better.
It does it so well that depending on the transfer of the movie, BD disc may rival 4k streaming.

This player will give you the best PQ from all three disc formats and no issues that people often bring up with other players.

If you have a home theater speaker set up, physical media is worth it over streaming. If you're using the speakers built into your TV or a soundbar, you won't notice much difference with blu ray vs streaming. The immense difference is in the audio quality.

Many years ago I bought a high-end Denon DVD player that was very slow to load and unload discs but more importantly did not have good crisp, detailed sound. After research, I sold it and bought a Panasonic DVD player with sound or music quality being the main reason for the switch. I believe the sound quality is one of the greater strengths of their disc players. As far as quietness when spinning, I've never noticed noise when playing a CD, though nowadays that is a very infrequent event.

Cool thanks. I have tons of CD's and still plug one in occasionally. Blu ray players are a great option when hooked up to a monitor for CD play back.
Stand alone CD players are just too costly for an occasional spin. My Sony UBP X800 on my main system is an excellent streamer as well as a very capable CD player

In the HDMI setup menu, I had the resolution set to "auto" and other settings similar to the manual online. The disc I used was an older one "Office Space", not a new 4k movie, not the point. There was absolutely no difference in PQ between the units not was the 420 faster loading or processing. He was correct in stating that I would not see a difference in PQ when viewing older non-4k movies and I also believe my A8H upscales well compared to run-of-the-mill TVs.

I think his logic is that if the TV does a better up-scaling than both 420 and the old BD80, then it doesn't matter to use which of these two players to play a non-4k Blu-ray disk since the TV will do the final up-calling in the end and display with the same PQ.
I'm also curious on if that logic is true.
Is there an option in 420 to not up-scale the disk and leave the job for the TV?

That's exactly what I'm saying. I did not own it long enough to see if there was an option not to up-scale the disc in the 420. Let me also be clear that the PQ on my TV during this comparison was very good, great PQ by any standard. I was simply running the test to see if a more modern player could add additional value by enhancing the PQ even further (splitting hairs) on an older non-4k Blu-ray which I did not see.

Well that's the point with BD80 it may make sense on whether the display is "upscaling" because it's getting fed 1080P content.

Unless you can "turn off" the upscaling from the 420(or any other player), the 420 will always "upscale" first. In other words the display is getting fed an upscaled 4k content.

There is no real way to make the comparison without shutting it off.

I've tried turning off SDR/HDR conversion HLG/PQ conversion and others just out of curiosity but I don't notice any real difference so I'm not sure you can.
Even in dealdude's comparison the display didn't upscale "better".

I can tell you I have tried many different BD movies and the upscaling is all over the place, from terrible to rivaling 4k streaming.
I'll give you one example Captain Marvel, the BD disc comes fairly close to 4k streaming on the 420.

Let's say dealdude25 is right to his own admission he loses nothing with upscaling with the 420. What he would gain is taking the best advantage of 4K(UHD) disc offers with that display but chooses to watch compressed streaming for that!!!

Not to mention the other half of movie watching, streaming has a significant drop in audio quality even compared to BD disc!!!
Unfortunately what often happens is they match that high end display with a very low end speakers and say well I don't hear a big difference, I don't know what the big deal is!!!

No offense taken I will enjoy my Oled display using the 420 listening on a 5.2.4 setup that follows Dolbys overhead layout, no need for BD80 since even you said "looked exactly the same".

I'll let you enjoy your 1080P disc & compressed 4k streaming on that high end display. You might want to run back and ask that BB sales person on advice on which soundbar to get to take advantage of to other half of movies & "Atmos" immersion from your 4k streaming.

Can you provide your recommendation based on his situation: he has a 4k TV which can up-scale very well and he only used the player to watch non-4k Blu-ray discs. Do you think it's worth to replace his old BD80 player with the new 420 player?
