Great mesh router. Have one myself. I tested this and orbi from costco and this one has a much faster wifi backhaul. Its too bad this thing is so expensive. Didnt even really see any black friday deals for this. Cheapest i could find was $350. I also recommend using firmware 42095. Its the most stable

If you want total customization over your mesh network, this is the brand to get, but for the price you are not getting the best performing mesh units out there. The fastest system that's cheaper is the TP-Link X5700, just putting it out there for anyone looking to take advantage of a full 1Gbps over Wifi, the AX5700 can out put around 1.4Gbps over wifi to a proper client, making it 1/3 to almost 2X faster which are all around 800-900Mbps. That is without wired backhaul which would actually bottle neck unless you are using 2.5Gbps or faster port and switches.

Anyone with experience with TP-Link AX11000 and this Asus router? I purchased fo AX11000 from 260 costco deal but would like to know if this Asus can be split and have each unit used as stand alone router so I can sell the second unit to a family member.

I am an early adopter of this mesh system and have been through many firmware updates and factory resets. My suggestion is not to update to the latest firmware until it has been thoroughly tested. I have to roll back the firmware at least twice. Some of the issues with the faulty firmware include exposing unprotected SSID, mesh disconnection, and wifi connection stability. A couple times, I thought my router is dead. However, there are a couple versions that are very stable. I wish they would test the firmware more thoroughly before releasing it. I feel like a beta tester.
Indeed i too feel like im a beta tester for them as they keep trying out various things with no fruitful outcome.
I have heard the version 42095 is stable and i loaded that today but couldnt notice much difference from other versions. What other versions you think is stable?

You can do what you're looking to do, though I wouldn't expect the reception to be as good as one with external antennae.

They have removed the earlier versions of firmware. As of now, 42095 is the most stable one. The latest 2 are both bad. There was another good one I think from August 2020 but it is no longer available.

Update: 'I am actually using firmware 25790 on XT8 which is more stable than 42095. For AX55 as mesh node, I have to use old firmware 4.384_10261. I have the mesh in AP mode wired to the main router AX86U which is not part of the mesh and has the latest firmware. Other than AX55, all are connected through a 2.5Gbps switch. This setup gives me the security as well as connection stability.

Did you do a hard reset?
Also, after flashing firmware, you should do a factory reset too. With one of the earlier firmware, it has to be reset afterward to solve the stability issue.

Once I thought it is dead after a firmware update as I cannot wifi connect to it at all. Finally, I wired to it and upload the firmware again.

Thanks for the heads up. Any distinguishing marks or tears on the units or box?
Nope, I imagine it will look perfectly normal, unfortunately. I didn't bundle the cords back together because I have zero skills in that department. I hope it works fine for you.

I believe the SSID underneath was ASUS_E0? Good luck!

Oh! I didnt know a factory reset was required after firmware flash. I was under impression that post factory reset , the original firmware that came with it will be active.

Thanks for the tip. I'll try a reset to see if that makes a difference.

You can do a hard reset first and then downgrade the FW to 42095. That FW is very stable for XT8.

Warehouse price is up to $274.50 now. Not as good as before, but still an option for those interested.

Thanks - i felt the same way except never had a chance to downgrade. Which version is the most stable at the moment from your experience?

EDIT: nevermind, I see now that someone posted the version number a few posts before.
