So I ordered 2 of these drives last week when I saw the deal, They arrived today in a 12"x16"x9" cardboard box and look at how they were packaged.... No protection other that a 3' string of plastic packaging No Wrap on the Drives at all... Just thrown in the box where I am sure UPS carefully handled them! (yea, right)

Last week I had to return a drive for warranty and they have a specific Packaging requirement or, the drives are returned.... I guess NewEgg didn't have those instructions when they sent me these....

The customer service person I first spoke to didn't know what a hard drive was, (nor did they care, Not their Job).... had no idea why I was upset.... I just have to ask anyone here on this tread see this as a problem? I have been in the computer business for over 30 years I have never encountered anything like this

Does anyone else see the problem or am I just being too hard on them?

Better to get Surveillance drives, rated to run 24/7. WD Purple. Sr71 and I had a good chat below. Take a look. Purple and Red are near equivalent except for nuances.

yes, Surveillance drives will prioritize write operations better

Thanks. I compared product sheets. They are equivalent in specs (perf, shock, etc). So, no the Reds are not better with reduced vibration, both are the same, including supporting close proximity to other drives. But you correctly overrode me either way. Also, the Reds are stated as 2 dB quieter. The Purple like you say is tuned for more streams. So, if you have a few cameras only, this isn't important. I'll edit my earlier post, but you have it quoted so people can good context here. Appreciate it.

question for the experts here. when buying one or two drives as a backup, what the standard protocol when you receive them and have no desire to use them right now? perhaps i might use them next year if i get another nas or something fails but for now, it's NIB....do i test it, check it out, etc? thinking about high rate of defective drives. or do i simply rely on warranty?

Is this from Newegg as well? I also have worked on computers since 286 and Apple II, and I have NEVER seen a hard drive packaged this way. This makes me nervous to hop on this deal. I am not sure how well these drives will endure the trip...

All you have to tell the csr is they shipped products containing glass plates loose in an oversized box. Often the platters are glass with media adhered to them.

I don't expect the person who packed that box to last long at their position.

It looks like whoever packaged the drive packaged it like it's an SSD, hence, the lack of needed pads and foam protection. I am not sure why it is shipped that way, most OEM/bare drives I bought in the past, comes fully protected inside a solid plastic air-shell/cushion/whatever-you-may-call-it to protect against vibration/bumps/drops.

Thanks for the post, I will not be ordering this (and yeah, I have been working with PC since early 90s with 1Mhz and turbo of 2Mhz speed, yes, we had a turbo button back then)..
