Zen4 will be same way later this year changing to LGA and DDR5 memory motherboards will be $200+ just like Z690

Most reviewers recommend DDR4 at this point since the gains are minor over the price you pay. I got the Gigabyte Z690 UD AX DDR4 motherboard and this RAM:

Should be good for a while

My experience could not be further from this. It's completely lacking core features of W10, like basic taskbar functionality that is an absolute nightmare to use -- can't unstack windows, forced to use thumbnails instead of window names, completely wasting 80% of the real estate of the task bar which you can't customize or change at all now. No second tool tray or clock on secondary monitors. Games that ran perfectly fine right up to the upgrade constantly hang, crash, black screen, etc. It wrecks VR stability and performance, and I constantly have to restart Steam VR and my computer to get games to even launch. My task bar icons on my secondary monitor scramble themselves into a spaced out mess randomly half a dozen times per day, where they get overlapped on top of each other and scattered into the empty space in the task bar, but the actual clickable area for the window sits in the original now-invisible spaces, and the only way to fix it is to restart the explorer process each time. I have yet to find one single good thing to say about this half baked pile of spaghetti code, and it won't be touched by a single business until they can achieve the basic stability and functionality of W10. It's insane that they removed so much basic content that is imperative to productivity.

TBH I really did not want to use Windows 11 due to the UI nightmare it is. But after using it for the last 1 month, I did not have any issues. I was able to tackle most UI issues through the settings and workarounds. Performance has been the same as Windows 10 or even better sometimes. I understand wanting to wait for the 22H2 update but I feel even at this point Windows 11 is ready to go.

I feel you...the taskbar is especially a mess. Have to use the keyboard shortcut instead of just right click on the taskbar to get the task manager which is super annoying. Although, for gaming I haven't had any crashes or performance issues. I did do a clean install and for each driver update I do clean driver install as well, maybe that helps?

For people hasn't used Win 11, you can't even display the seconds in the system clock.

It's 2022 and they can't get clock right.

Why would you disable cores you have paid for? Plus why would baby drive those K under heavy workloads bc of thermal issues? 12th gen is another fail no matter where you view it! unless you buy i5 series which look interesting but again too much restrictions on B660 chipset with no overclocking support, why Intel never do things right so everyones happy.
Supposedly, there may be some B660 motherboards that can enable overclocking of non-K models. At least until someone decides to remove that with a BIOS update.

Like Lakefield, Alder Lake is definitely a beta test of heterogeneous x86, but it already works well in some areas and you can expect things to improve. I also expect AMD to launch their own heterogeneous CPUs a couple years from now with less problems than Alder Lake is experiencing because relevant fixes will already be in place to address Alder Lake, Raptor Lake, and future heterogeneous microarchitectures.

I picked up a 12700k at launch and a DDR4 Z690, price wasn't too bad and performance has been great. One very big exception… you need Win11 with Thread Director to make the most of of your efficiency cores. Since I don't want to deal with games and TPM on Win 11, I'm staying with Win10 until at least Win11 SP1.

Without thread Director you'll get some glitches in games when some threads hit the efficiency cores. It's pretty annoying.

Workaround? Disable E-cores.
What you you think you "deal with" for tpm aside from ensure it is enabled? There is literally nothing you have to do with it if your motherboard has it onboard...

It sounds like you ran preview/beta versions. I had the preview and it was a bit wonky, i reinstalled winn1 with the disc after release and have none of the things you have described. :/

FYI, you can right click on the windows 11 start menu icon to access the expected shortcuts

Gonna also need a new motherboard, from what I've read, so that needs to be factored… and DDR5 ram, unless your new mobo supports old DDR4 ram…

Probably looking at double this price just to start, provided you already have all the other components.
Wow, you mean you need a compatible motherboard when you buy a CPU? Amazing. You must be in IT!

I just built a brand new build with a $288 AMD 5600x and $180 ASUS ROG Strix B550-A mono and DD4 RAM. My card is from my old machine - a GTX 1070 SC EVGA and will remain that way until prices come down.

While I doubt I'd take it all down to return it at this point, I am still in the return window for all my parts. Curious what others would do.

I am designing my latest build and almost jumped at this chip ... that is until I considered the facts. My current design concept is to use a Ryzen 5600X with an AM4 MB. This design will provide me with a system that is almost 4 times faster/more powerful than my current rig. The 12700 is very attractive at this price BUT I have to consider issues such as price ($80 more) and MB ($100 or more). The biggest issue for me is the power draw. The 12700K is about 50% faster/more powerful than the 5600X, but that comes with a price. The 12700K draws 190W or 3x that of the 5600X! I am not concerned about my power bill ... I am concerned about heat. For me, the extra 50% performance boost is far outweighed by the extra costs AND inefficiency of the chip (190W vice 65W).

No deal here for me ... poo ...

Really excited about this generation of CPUs. It's about time Intel came with a bang! Love the competition and us consumers will only benefit by these great offers in the long run.

My desktop gaming PC definitely throttles when running the newest AAA games at 1440p. I will eventually upgrade my CPU but until I can secure a new GPU, I will just continue to use my gaming laptop for now.

And as others have said, its going to take buying a new MoBo as well and I plan on taking full advantage of DDR5 so I'll wait until those prices come down a bit.

Did the upgrade (though since I had new hardware I did a fresh install), had a similar experience to you. Although I am using Start11 to mitigate the worst parts of the UI (ie., no taskbar shortcut on right click, start menu).

About to do fresh install tonight. Would you suggest 10 or 11?

I think you answered your own question... stick to your current setup unless you want to spend more. I think the heat consideration is overblown as long as you have a good case/chassis to facilitate proper airflow. I'd be more focused on maximizing your RAM and GPU setup rather than the choice of platform. Maybe even minor stuff like if your chassis and mobo support front I/O thunderbolt 4 ports. DDR5 is shit for now, but will go mainstream by next year (once Zen4 launches).
