Just no. NEVER use a bare conductor to carry current. It's unsafe and it's against code. If a qualified electrician wouldn't dare do this, what makes you think it's good advice for a bunch of amateurs on SD fiddling with their home's wiring?

A ground conductor is meant to carry fault current ONLY.
Man, lot of bad info in here.

1. No, these are not dimmable. There is a separate model that is dimmable.
2. No, these can't be used as a 3-way. There is a separate model that is for 3-way set ups.
3. These are wifi only devices. Will not work with z-wave or zigbee protocols. Not much of a concern though unless you have a basic wifi setup which is never recommended. Get a dedicated IoT network for things like this to reduce your risks. Granted, hacking is very rare and the Kasa switches are highly susceptible to hacking but anything is possible for someone who is adamant but then again, that goes for anything, not just smart switches.
4. Connection issues are rare too. Any wifi device can/may have connection issues. Nothing inherent is wrong with these switches. They do require a 2.4ghz network and one that doesn't have a wide channel band. Most IoT devices are very simple, no need to prioritize speed here so keep that network setup simple. I have over 20 Kasa devices in my house, never had a connection issue, but a lot of that is a robust network setup vs. a simple Target purchased router.
5. Tapo is not likely to replace Kasa. Kasa is thriving very well in this space and their product line is growing. I don't see them going away any time soon.
No. There's a different model with the traveler wire.

Have these in the house. They randomly lose connection and become locally controllable only. YMMV

This happened to me only when I lost power or internet was down for an extended period. My old switches are around 2+ year old , I never had local only issue.

IMHO, if you are going through the trouble of putting something in the walls, get something adhering to some larger standard (e.g. z-wave or zigbee).

That being said, these are controllable locally via a hubitat hub --BUT-- it requires a community plugin. So ymmv on longetivity if the product-line goes tits up and whoever is hacking on it loses interest.

I've had one of these switches installed for the last 3 years. It in no way needs a hub of any sort I could control it as long as I have internet access on my phone and internet access at home.

I bought the Feit dimmable smart switches from Costco. Yet to install them, $10 each. This switch is not dimmable? Just trying to think through if I want to replace the few on/off switches with these so all switches are smart.

Once hacked will be fkdup, lol.
I have had Kasa for about 4 years now and Feit for about 2 years. I have maybe 20 Kasa switches and 6-8 Feit switches. None of them has given me any trouble even though I set them all up to go through a guest network instead of standard home network (so any "smart control" has to go through the internet.. not just local). If you already bought Feit at a cheaper price, I would say keep them - they give you more options (dimmer, 3-way, less space to install).

I said you *can* control it locally (no internet) with hubitat for if/when the proprietary cloud-based service TP-link uses to currently control these is sunset.

Again, IMHO, if you are going through the trouble of installing stuff in-wall you should really be thinking about the probability of having to rip it out 10-20 years from now. Most people likely have light switches / dimmers, etc. in their walls which predate the invention of wifi much less IOT, just food for thought.

Changes to the Services

The Services may change over time, as we improve them. At any time, we may temporarily or permanently modify, suspend, discontinue, or restrict access to all or part of the Services and/or any related software, facilities, and services, with or without notice and/or to establish general guidelines and limitations on their use. Some such changes to the Services may render certain hardware devices, third-party services, configurations, or software setups inoperable. We may make such changes at our sole discretion and with or without notice.

This is alarming, I've got like 20 of their smart devices around/installed in the house, would suck for them to turn into not smart devices.

I have multiple rooms with these and have never had a problem. Voice commands always work and I never have issues with the Wifi connections. Around $10 each is a great price for these.

I'm sure every device like this has that in their TOS but I would be mad if that happened to me.

I don't think they're talking about a neutral wire. The traveler wire is needed to do a three way switch. Neutral is a different thing. Pretty sure you need a neutral wire to use this.
Thanks, that explains the down votes. I appreciate the info.

What is the criteria for "robust network setup?"

Separate IoT network, firewall rules, vlans, etc. Nothing will be bulletproof, but there are ways to reduce your risk. Since most people don't do this, i'm not the house in my neighborhood that'll get messed with.
