Everyone should send a drive to WD for recycle. You'll get a 15% off coupon and can use it for as much stuff as you'd like. Wait till rak10 has their biggest cash back and WD has their best sales..usually in November. 16 months ago, I scored a 16 tb WD Red Pro for $230!!!! List is ~$560!! This fall, I got 2 14 tb's at Best Buy for $170 by exchanging 2 old drives for credit. Did the same at WD which brought the final price to ~$140!!! Sold one of the 3 14's for $200! I do wheel and deal. I sold 2 8 tb's and a 10 tb for $310 total... not bad as they were used. Sold 2 8's for about 120 ea a year ago, but they were new.

Did the tape or the drive fail? I would assume the drive but the context makes me think the tape.

Not to make light of sushiserv situation but from my own little sample size, my 4 from mid 2020 and 4 from bf 2021 have been fine. The only issue I had was when I moved my 4 drives from 2020 the tape came off and I had to reapply it.

If you do decide to go this route here is the tape I bought and a link to instructions on which pin to cover.

There's a tape trick you have to do, but it works.

Granted, I've had a few fail so far.

Not a bad price, but not good considering I got 14 Tb for ~$180 just six months ago.

This is not a slickdeal. It's actual more expensive ($16.88/TB) than the 12TB for $199 ($16.67/TB) at Amazon. Unless you need 16TB right now, I'd wait.

I've shucked 5 drives so far and never had to use tape on them, I've used them all on my NAS. I think it depends on your motherboard or backplane. I saw a compatibility list on reddit one time, but can't find it now

It has nothing to do with your motherboard, it has to do if your PSU/Backplane supports PWDIS.

The tape trick is OK in a pinch. I pull the board off the drive and cut pin 3 when I shuck mine. Don't have to worry about tape moving when you plug and unplug them.

All the more reason to get this. So when they take out the internet you'll still have access to porn.

Unfortunately the electrical grid may go as well. So you'll need as solar power system... Assuming EMPs don't take out all your electronics.
