I bought this. The effective cooking surface is far smaller than 8 inches as others have mentioned. I was very close to returning it when we found out it just the right size for a single box of Jiffy cornbread which suits us fine since we don't have kids. We actually love it for that, but it is so small I couldn't imagine using it for much else.
For cast iron corn bread, put it in the oven or under the broiler. Get it smoking hot and drop in an ounce of butter. Swirl it to coat the walls and then pour the Jiffy cornbread on top of the butter. Then bake till it gets a little golden brown on top. The bottom will be crispy.
fyi, bottom of pan diameter is only 5.5 inches.
OK for deep frying chix for one. Better for baking small cornbread rounds.
Lots of choices in cast iron for < $15, this is OK for its limited capabilities.
I love skillet cornbread but my 10" fry pan needs 2 boxes of batter to give a nice height to the finished product. Rather than buy this one trick pony I went a different route.
For those who want more cooking space below, Lodge has a Dutch oven where the top is an 8" skillet. It's also a good size for cornbread and offers two loop handles, so it's just as efficient if you want to use it on your grill. But it also gives you a complete Dutch oven. It does cost more than this but it might get more use overall if you would benefit from a CI DO.

Glad to see someone else agrees a serving of cornbread is a half a box (or more)!

This pan is small but it's perfect for making garlic bites in my gas Ooni pizza oven. I take leftover dough, roll them into bite size balls and put them in this pan. I usually make these at the end so the oven is nice and hot. I turn the oven off before putting the pan in and leave it for about 5 minutes. Perfect every time.
I have a larger version of same brand cast iron skillet. Great quality. Just remember to season it every so often. Recommend flaxseed oil based on my research (high smoke point oil)
