I've got this. It makes a single pack of Jiffy cornbread well. For most cooking a 10" skillet will be way more useful. This one won't be useful for much as the actual cooking surface on bottom might be only 6".

You got up too early because the whiskey you drank too much of last night has you groggy. However, brain over body and you get your layers on. You take to the ridges, you try not to rustle the leaves as you stalk through the woods. You bag three busy grey squirrels at daybreak. As the weather turns the fox squirrels begin to grunt and you bag two. Back to the cabin where you boil your meat, you knead a dough, you get out two of these pans and fold it into a crust…. You turn your slick dealt inverter on, press play to continue your favorite Merle tape and have the best cast iron baked pies on the mountain. That is what these are good for.
I cook a lot but have NEVER used cast iron… what's some common uses for this size and type?

Cast iron is the best imo - indestructible, affordable, and maintains temperature super well. And no fear of Teflon fumes/flakes! We used a lodge 12 and 10 inch skillet all the time for frying eggs, searing steaks and salmon, cornbread, pancakes, and deep frying (to name a few). Have a 10 inch flat skillet for tortillas and pancakes.
The heavy weight takes some getting used to...
Had decent stainless steel skillets as our first skillets and did not like the experience as I disliked having to use products like barkeepers to keep pristine.
Bought lodge carbon steel a few months ago and that has become our more goto cookware as it's lighter but still maintains temperature okay. Kinda warps on electric stoves tho... But still useable.
The 8 inch might be good for frying 2/3 eggs or making a small cornbread? But, with no long handle, this one might be able to fit in a toaster oven...
