Amazon is selling the 1TB Samsung 970 Evo Plus M.2 NVMe SSD for $83.99. Shipping is free. This is a Gen 3.0 SSD but if you're using it just for gaming I think it's almost as fast as a Gen 4.0 980 Pro.

"Most SSDs on the market today use a DRAM cache to improve latency and bandwidth. However, due to the nature of DRAM chips, DRAM cannot store data when power is lost, which is a legitimate reliability concern for SSDs when unexpected power outages occur. Most consumer SSDs aren't equipped with the power loss capacitors that we see on enterprise SSDs, which makes them more vulnerable to losing data during unexpected power loss events.

The DRAM chip holds a lot of important data, not just temporary data that needs to be transferred to NAND storage. DRAM also holds the drive's FTL or Flash Transition Layer, which is used as a map to see where data is stored on the drive. If the FTL is corrupted, the entire SSD could also become corrupted.

Thankfully, some SSD manufacturers have countermeasures in place for such an occasion. One example is a technique used by Samsung that employs journaling to keep as much data intact as possible during a power outage. Journaling allows SSDs to keep track of what changes need to be made to the SSD from the OS's file system before they happen. When a power outage occurs and data is lost in the DRAM cache, the SSD knows what data was already transferred to the NAND (and what data was lost directly from the journal). "

ALSO THIS:

"Russ Bishop, a programmer at Apple, noticed some interesting and rather worrying behavior from some NVMe SSDs when he tested the impact of a power outage on the cached data.

Out of the four SSDs that Bishop tested, two of them worked perfectly as they should, preventing data loss. These two models are:

Samsung 970 EVO Plus
WD Red SN700

The two other models that lost data are:

SK hynix Gold P31 2TB
Sabrent Rocket 512"

What's with the salt? A lot of people have notifications set up for M.2 deals specifically to get one for their PS5 like me. No one posted if it was compatible so I checked the Amazon reviews and saw it wasn't. Someone who wants on for the PS5 will see my post and save them the time having to check themselves.

Wondering exactly the same thing - My Legion 5 has a platter 1tb secondary drive I want to replace with an nvme, just need to pick betwixt this and the SK Hynix.

I just put the SK Hynix in my Lenovo 5 pro Laptop. Runs cooler than most chips and I got incredible speed benchmarks. Very happy with it. No need for a heat-synch with he Hynix.

770 is a 4.0 drive. So it will have better speed in most time.
Quote from snowcrash :
SN770 is pcie 4.0 so faster but you won't notice it much unless you're doing content production. What you'll get with Samsung is the highest reliability without question.
Thank you. I know the SN770 is Gen 4 and it costs $20 more than this deal but this deal seems to have more thumbs up so I'm kinda reluctant a bit there.

Quote from Teaser38 :
Generally faster, but the 970 EVO Plus has hardware AES encryption and DRAM. The SN770 is also hot and the ex-Toshiba chips with no-DRAM make me a little nervous about service life.
It has no DRAM but research shows its performance to be on par with DRAM cache.

That's what I was wondering. I'm the OP, but I'm using this only for gaming. For gaming only I think various YouTube videos show the increase in speed of Gen 4 is negligible. Still, the Sabrent deal has the added flexibility of being compatible with a PS5, which I have.

It's the game mode on it and check tomshardware review

Sony wants 5000mB/s+ read speed for playing PS5 games. It'll still work for PS4 and you can still transfer PS5 games for storage. You'll be moving data constantly unless you only play a few games at a time.

What's the actual size of the 1TB for this Samsung? Bought a recent Hynix 1TB and was 920-930gb, which was less than my Adata which I get 953gbs.

Not sure the downvote... legit question, I'm buying it for an external storage, would like to have the most capacity out of the 1TB.

My thinkpad is compatible with Gen4. I don't game or do graphic design. Use it a lot for programming. Should I get this or get gen4?
