Amazon Treasure Truck had the 4k for $29 a couple weeks back and I grabbed one.

I like the Roku interface so much better than the Firestick. The search feature for movies is something I really like as it tells me when a movie I like is available on one of the apps I have. Beyond that the menu is better organized and searching for apps seems easier. Roku much much better than Firestick in my opinion.
Same.

If anyone is looking at the 4k stick and trying to figure out the difference between it and the 4k+ stick it's only that the plus model has the rechargable pro remote. While the 4k stick is on sale for $40 it's actually like $1 cheaper to buy the 4k stick and pro remote separately than buy the 4k+ stick, plus you get a spare remote!

It's no quirk. Issue doesn't exist with any other connected devices, only the Rokus I've owned.

TV is a Vizio 4K, only a year old or so. Audio output is set to digital, etc. Fire Stick, Xbox One, even an old PS3 all output the proper Dolby. Roku only outputs PCM.

Its actually a pretty well known annoyance if you search Roku forums or even Reddit.
IIRC, Fire stick and Xbox one will basically ALWAYS output in Dolby digital if set as such. Roku on the other hand have only ever produced a handful of models that had Dolby Digital encoders (iirc only on a few Ultras at that). I had to tweak the passthrough settings on my Sony TV before my Roku stopped doing something similar to what you describe... if the soundbar is only Dolby digital capable. Then that Seems to further mirror my experiences.

This also occurred with another TV before I got the new one and with other Rokus. It's something in their software. Forcing the Roku to DD or DD+ just sends PCM stereo as default.

I've also read where it's not even possible to get anything other than DD+ out of Disney Plus or Netflix on a Roku, so if your soundbar doesn't support DD+ then you're stuck with PCM. There's no DD 5.1 at all.

Disappointing because I've always been a Roku supporter.

Again it's because the vast majority of Roku models lack a Dolby digital encoder. DD+ is not backwards compatible with DD and if that's all your soundbar supports it needs to be re-encoded on the fly. The 2020 Ultra (4800X) however does have one. You should check to see if your TV can handle this. Like I said my Sony TVs can.

Personally been happy with my Chromecast with Google TV. If you're a gamer, it's a far superior to device as you can pretty much put any of the game streaming apps you'd like on it. Stadia and Steam Link you can just download from the store. PlayStation Remote Play and Xbox Cloud, just sideload it. Never tried Luna but I'm sure you can get that working too. Since it's just Android you can use pretty much any gamepad you'd like. It's honestly pretty awesome. Stadia especially is really well optimized and if you got the Stadia controller and do the direct to wifi setup, it's flawless, it's a real shame Google is giving up on Stadia.

And that's why anyone reading should just use something else for the cost Smilie

Can somebody please enlight me what's the purpose of getting this device. Almost all 4K tv's comes with OS that supports most of the apps. Lowest quality products comes with Roku built in. Not trying to be smart, just really wondering.

Depends on the TV but for most low-end TVs, the built-in OS experience is terrible. This would be a drastic improvement I imagine.

i have a bunch of these and other roku devices. Im currently using directv stream and find an issue where randomly the sound goes out or gets loud and you have to change channel for it to return to normal. it never happens with prime or netflix or disney just directv stream. I have one apple device and it never happens with that so i assume its some directv stream/roku app issue
I have a few roku devices and one of my devices was having this issue. It was one of the older stick models. Replaced it and no issues since. For some reason it only would happen with directnow as well.

anything with an HDMI in will work. you just wont be able to use the universal remote feature which allows you to turn on and off the tv.

I think Roku is losing battle to android TV devices. Because they don't allow you to install third party apps.
Roku needs to lower price of their devices.
You can play games on android TV devices but not Roku.
Android devices are completely crap after 12 months and unusable. My Roku is running on for 5 years and has needed 2 reboots in those years. Where as my android requires weekly reboots, honestly I just stopped using it.

Lol. Roku is still the #1 selling streaming device. Unlike the other devices like Fire Sticks and whatnot, the Roku system runs really well, with far less lag than the others. The apps are better built for Roku, as well. A very small subset of people care about playing games on a device like this, or loading other third party apps. The vast majority are perfectly happy with the standard streaming apps.

If you still have cable service via Spectrum, you can use the app on this to watch cable TV instead of renting a cable box. I have 4 TVs and $12 per cable box so saving $48 per month.

Also, most smart TV interfaces are slow and can't download additional apps etc.
