Thanks for the link. If you actually watch the Chinese video that the article references the new controller Samsung switched to is significantly faster than the old for the first 115G written in a sustained burst, up to 1GB/s faster in fact. It's only after 115G where the new controller is slower. I can't think of many workloads that write 115GB in a single sustained write. I can think of a lot of workloads that write less than 115GB though and those run much faster. Also, the new controller they switched to is the one they use in their 980 pro, so this doesn't look like some kind of cost-reduction switcharoo.

lr;dr - The new controller Samsung switched to on latest shipments is actually preferable to the old controller.

If it was any place other than Newegg I'd be jumping on this, but I just can't take dealing with them. Last year, after huge hassles with a return, I said 'never again'. Sticking to it.

Can't say I truly "regret" purchasing the 1TB version of this (several months ago - and it's been great) for only a few $ less than this, but it is good to see storage prices moving in the right direction for a change…

Although I do have to wonder if they're still using the inferior/slower controller they sort of secretly switched to last year. I haven't seen an update since this was published.

I have this 2TB drive in my Dell XPS 15 laptop for 2 years. It's fast & great but runs really hot. Idling & normal browsing, office work often result temp between 45-55°C.

My other XPG 4TB in my laptop only showing 30-35°C temp at any given moment, idling or intense work.

Seems temp increase would be my main concern. Reps.

Think I'll stick with Crucial p5 I just ordered if that's the case.

Saw this deal and immediately pulled the trigger...2TB for $150 from reputable manufacturer. Life is good.

Then...read the updated review on arstechnica (https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2...plus-ssds/) about the controller swap and then the above post regarding operating temps. Was planning on upgrading my LG Gram which I don't believe will accommodate a heat sink (its an "ultrabook"). Just cancelled the order.

Same, Newegg went downhill fast. They used to be my go-to. I won't buy anything from them anymore

The better question is if you would ever notice outside synthetic benchmarks

+1.
Had couple of bad experiences with them, one time bought new phone and when it arrived it was clearly used and abused,it was a struggle to return and get full refund for it.
Never buying from them again.

Interesting. I'd never seen that perspective on it. I'll admit I just read the ars article and went no further (other than looking for a recent update.)
