Hi can I buy a few of these and use them as wireless Access points like a mesh system? I want to use my Asus 86u as the VPN router with one of these connected by Ethernet and the other 2 connected wirelessly to the first one. With these 3 routers handling all the wifi? Is this possible?

The WAX202 is available for $39.99 on Netgears website. Also there it's listed as a wireless access point only. Not a router.
So are they the same?

Good deal! I bought two from Microcenter a few months ago for $50 each. Used them as access points to expand coverage on the edges of my home network (garage, patio). They work great!
Can I use it as an access point by connecting it to the main router through WiFi and then connect it to TV, etc. using Ethernet cables?

Found the answer at Amazon:

Question:
can i use this to connect to WiFI and provide hardwire connection?
Answer:
Yes you can connect the WAX202 on AP mode and set it as a bridge to connect to your router's wifi and have LAN devices connect.

You are not the only one got confused ^^
It is router and access point from the manual.

Probably a bit late with this info, but in case it's still helpful to someone...

I have them setup as access points, as shown in the manual, then wired to my router (which is called back hauling). My router was an older ac1900, turned the access point off (usually just listed as Wireless Settings), jacked the two WAX202's in and instantly upgraded my wireless to Wifi6! Works like a charm.
