The 5600G has 16MB of cache instead of 32MB on the 5600, and only supports PCI Express 3.

Just keep in mind that this will be the last one that you can upgrade using your current hardware. Next cycle you'll be needing a new motherboard and memory. Gotta give AMD props for keeping board combability over the years, but it's time to move forward with AM5.

I have a 1080p 360hz monitor that I use purely for competitive FPS. I game at that resolution because it's what I grew up playing CS 1.3 to 1.6. Back then there was no HD, and getting the best FPS meant lowering the resolution. I also like the FoV in lower resolution, but it's mainly out of habit.
You are probably around the same age as I am, then. Kudos to you for remaining competitive. Me, I just play R6 Siege these days.... when you are an old guy playing with young bucks there is no shame in shooting at backs from dirty angles and through walls...

Ha respect. I play mostly faceit as MM is just cancer these days. What I lack in aim I make up in game sense. It's always fun to win against kids half your age.

Guys, I bought the 5600 to replace my 1700 on my B350 motherboard. I'm also planning on upgrading my 8GB RX480 later this fall when the new Gen video cards come out, prices stabilize because of crypto crashing, and Black Friday etc. BUT will I be sacrificing a lot of performance by keeping the B350 platform around? My RAM is also 16GB dual channel at 2667MHz, and SSD is SATA based, but I believe the M.2 slot on my motherboard supports NVMe but not sure. I wanted to breathe new life to my 2017 gaming rig, as painless on the wallet as possible lol

You won't sacrifice any performance other than PBO with a B350 motherboard. I have the 5600 and it's good for 4.7-4.8ghz OC'd. You want memory that runs 3600mhz or 3800mhz for Ryzen CPU's.

That may require a BIOS flash for it to work. It might not support third gen Ryzen chips out of the box.

You really want to stick with Asus or MSI for motherboards. Gigabyte has been hit and miss for a long time. If you want to go the gigabyte route you would want a B550 or X570. Those are expensive right now. Unless you already have ram and a board. I would wait for Zen 4. If they start having crazy motherboard/CPU combos like during the Zen+ era. Different story.

Is the Wraith Stealth that comes with the 5600 any better with thermals than the RGB Wraith Spire that my old 1700 came with?

Pairing this CPU with an MSI B550M PRO-VDH WIFI motherboard which Newegg and Amazon have for $110 at the moment. Hopefully will be a nice upgrade for my i5-2500K I've been using for 11 years. Tried playing God of War the other day and my trusty old CPU was causing a bottleneck, so figured it's time to take the plunge on something that will get me to 2033.

Currently running a I7-7700k unRaid server with plex, I'm using a P4000 for HW transcoding so I don't need quick sync. Anyone see any benefit getting something like this just for the additional 2 cores and it being newer?
wattage 65w vs 95w
and double multi-core speed
single core speed about the same

Yup - and I play on a controller, too lol... as you get older you realize what they mean about fighting with your brain is better than brawn alone...

Anyway, I get the feeling that there are a heck of a lot more middle aged gamers that just play in the closet, so to speak. It sure probably isn't 12 year olds that are buying up all the 3080s and 3090s here on SD lol

I think it all depends whether intel is able to shove AMD back into the poorville penalty box for a decade like they did 2010-2020. If they do, it'l be back to 5% gains per year at best...
