Anyway, I get the feeling that there are a heck of a lot more middle aged gamers that just play in the closet, so to speak. It sure probably isn't 12 year olds that are buying up all the 3080s and 3090s here on SD lol
Short answer, I don't think your setup will limit performance much, if at all.
Your ram is a tad slow, but workable. Keep it!
If you did change anything else, buy 3000 or 3200 ram (sweet spot). But ram compatibility is really tricky on first gen boards. You could buy 3600 and cross your fingers. But, for a budget, I would keep what you got.
Your motherboard (ram and ssd) is not a performance issue. The issue is will your mb support newer hardware. Check its website for hardware compatibility. You probably need a bios update for the cpu.
That is the beauty of socket AM4. Maximize your savings and keep upgrading cpu and video card and hang on to your motherboard and ram.
So, without knowing the specifics of your hardware, I assume that if your motherboard indeed is compatible with this cpu then it is an fantastic improvement, Great upgrade!
I personally would sit on the SSD and 16Gb of ram, and throw all the rest of your budget into the best graphics card you can afford.
NVME is mostly for kicks! Most SATA SSDs are plenty fast for most situations. If yours is big enough, keep it. If you need more space, buy NVME or a SATA SSD as its a little cheaper and simpler.
It might be tricky to add a NVME compatibility-wise on an old motherboard like yours and make sure it takes PCIe NVME m.2 sticks not just SATA m.2 sticks. But for real world performance, an NVME is not likely gonna see much of a gain.
Your ram, motherboard and SSD are fine performance-wise in your preferred realm of financial painlessness.
Its all cpu and gpu upgrades form here... enjoy maximizing still relevant 5 year old tech!
With cooler you can sell the 2700x around $120 on ebay which will net about $100 after shipping and fees. For $50 out of pocket its about a 20% uplift in performance.
Thanks, it's on its way. Now, if only gpu prices come down with the new series coming up. I'll be looking for a 3070/3080 to pair with it.
