Last two times I've ordered from Target and the item was actually out of stock, they offered to ship it for free. YMMV.

Playback of 4k BDs on recent CPUs has been killed:

I suppose you could still rip the discs but what a PITA
Indeed, what a PITA. DRM has foiled my LEGIT playback concerns for years. Cablecard usage on my HdHomeRun was a headache for many years, but this one takes the cake.

With this level of difficulty, the roar of the high seas beckons me...

we have TONS of 8mm as well. all of my childhood vids were on 8mm.
the Sony camcorder still works. it's about the size of a desktop computer that you would have to hold on your shoulder.

and we have reels from the 1950s we were given by family members who are long since deceased, we've been meaning to have converted

Recently bought a Wolverine 8mm and Super 8 Film Reel Converter to convert some of my 80's movies, paid almost $300. To convert VHS tapes to digital is much easier and cheaper. Checked and I can still read my oldest CD's from 1996 and 1997.

It uses USB connection. As long as the chromebook has a USB port, it will work. The USB-C port will need a adapter.

Not sure about that. I have an old external CD R/W with USB. Plugged it into my chromebook and... nuthin' :-(

Oh that's awesome!
I believe our reels are 16mm.
Can we buy a 16mm to digital converter to do the conversions ourselves?
Apologize for the ignorance, don't know much about this stuff

Yes. Instead buying this item (which has too many imposed restrictions), buy a USB to SATA adapter that comes with a power brick/supply, because you need a power brick to run the DVD burner. Turn your internal DVD burner from years ago to external DVD burner. Those old DVD burners don't have so many restrictions. They cost nothing. I saved 5 or 6 of them from discarded PC's.
I do that but no power brick is required.

I use my dvd reader once a year to rip TurboTax and share it with family otherwise I'd trash my old celeron laptop.

To convert 16mm film I guess you will need to send to professional service, its too old.
Regarding my 1996 CD's, the CD burners at the time were about $1,000. They would charge about $100 to burn a single CD!

Not necessarily, they degrade over time, you'd essentially would have to keep backups of backups and store them in a super clean environment. To top it off are easily lost in natural disasters.

Thanks for the heads-up. The item's specs didn't say chrome OS support. I guess that's the problem. I've never had chromebook. I don't like imposed restrictions.
