Bought one of these in the last sale. They run the new stable OpenWRT image very nicely. A breeze to flash directly from the stock firmware. 5ghz Wifi6 range is short by definition so I'm grabbing another. Tempted to get 2 more honestly.

I've been refreshing this item once a day and it wasn't $30 this morning. Thanks!

I don't use a special mesh solution, I use wired ethernet backhaul and multiple APs with the same SSID and different channels. There are tips for getting devices to switch over to the closer AP (fast handoff) but it works okay for me without having done anything special aside from ensuring each AP is on a separate channel

Seems like a good deal for a wifi 6 router. Doesn't look like you can wall mount though...maybe double sided tape?

when you buy more to link together.. does it work like a mesh network? I had an old setup that uses different routers as "access points" but it won't switch to a closer network if I'm inbetween 2 access points, it would just continue to latch on the farther one because it was technically still in range

Netgear routers. What could go wrong. Also Walmart has had this same model at $25 on clearance shelves off and on for quite awhile now. Even at $25 I wouldn't touch them. Netgear does not do well on security updates and they are notorious Swiss cheese. Just saying.

The good news is that these devices are well supported by OpenWRT and have a good mediatek CPU that the openwrt community is excited about

Have 4, bought a spare...thanks op. Openwrt runs well, using fast handoff...but I cap each ap to 25 devices (it will support more but struggling above 35)

That's what I'm using mine for. I set it up about a month ago in AP mode just for my Quest 2, and it's been fantastic. It's one of the recommended routers by the Virtual Desktop developer. I highly recommend it, too, after setting mine up!

One of Netgear's biggest perennial weaknesses is their firmware. The UX is horrible and changing any setting requires waiting a solid minute or two to take effect. In 2022, it's amazing such a poor experience exists. Of course, this applies to the web UX only--Netgear would rather you use their shitty app, instead, which isn't a lot better. Some of the gaming routers have a better web user interface, but buying consumer-grade wifi gateways is a fool's errand--they're all junk.

love seeing it at 30 tho.. got another. i'll prob get another one next time.. I just don't wanna buy 4 now.. bc i know i'll wanna buy more next sale.. smh. i'm trying to spread out my needless spending

i bought a $120 asus router last year.. 5Ghz drops all the time.. requires a restart.. so annoying. even have it schedules to restart every day and it'll still go down. never again will i buy an asus router.

That's why you install OpenWRT on these routers. It has a great Mediatek CPU that is held back by the firmware. OpenWRT fixes that. There's a reason this router is the most popular budget router in the OpenWRT community.
