The Shield can't play YouTube HDR videos.
If you have a good home theater audio setup, this device is almost a must. Lossless audio is possible here where it isn't on any other streaming specific device (mostly applicable to high quality Blu Ray rips and the like). It does excel at other things though too (I.E. AI up scaling).

Unfortunately, it is expensive and uses older hardware that doesn't fully support all the new stuff. It does well with most things though.

There are some people that find it getting to be buggy, while others still have a great experience after 3 years of ownership.

I personally think this is still too expensive for a device using 3 year old hardware, but I would buy a new version of this. However, I'm not sure if Nvidia will update the hardware again.

If you just want a device that works and you aren't worried about playing high quality Blu Ray rips, this is probably overkill - I'd probably look at the firetv, Roku, ccwgtv, Apple 4k, etc.

Here's a decent discussion on Reddit comparing the Apple TV 4k / Firecube 3 / Shield Pro TV - https://www.reddit.com/r/ShieldAn...are_button

Edit - it's also at Best Buy and B&H Photo for the same price.
They have milked this hardware for to long now. It was the best of the best in 2016 but has been losing it's edge year by year. It has become a pain to reboot every few days after the Google update.

Could be worse like the Quest 2 when they INCREASED the price years later
To be fair... the Oculus division this quarter brought in 285M in revenue. And lost 3.5 billion...... so they clearly are subsidizing a lot of the VR cost right now......

I found a video comparing the Shield TV 2015 vs the pro 2019+ and surprisingly, the only thing the 2015 can't do is the Dolby Vision so I'm going to stick with my tried and true device. He also compared it to the newest Apple TV and Fire TV Cube and the supported formats are less for both of those.

Perhaps the best value for those just streaming would be to keep an eye for a used 2015 and just buy the new remote.

True... they definitely were taking a hit on the hardware. I know the Shield had ads added to the home screen by google and I wonder if Nvidia got any money by not using a different launcher or if they were contractually obligated to keep it.

I'd stay away from this. I have 3 shield devices in my house. My newest one is this model and I've been fighting nvidia tech support for half a year now. I've had this replaced with refurbished units that have even more issues. My last replacement wouldn't get out of 720p mode and I'm waiting on the next one. My original 2 were/are great but this price isn't worth the hassle for something that is horribly supported after your Amazon return window.
Wow dude. My roommate plugged in his and it did 4k out of the box. Then I bought one about 3 months ago. Also does 4K flawlessly. Maybe you are using bad cables? Alot of low grade "4K" cables coming out of "good" brands. You should watch Linus Tech Tips hdmi tester video. Brands like monoprice did super bad.

I hate nvidia as much as anybody, but this version is gen. 3, not the gen. 1 from 2015.
I thought there were only two generations... the first gen that had all the storage, and then the second gen with the better hardware (but where they then 'cheaped out' on storage).

This is best if the best. It is still going strong doesn't struggle to play content. The UI is still snappy. Even for 2019 hardware this is still strong.

I have the OG 2015 500gb version and it's still working but I use it sparingly because the display is dim, compared to an apple tv or Roku ultra. It's still good but compared to the others still noticable. I've tried all the hdr settings and different hdmi cables but still the same. If anyone knows of a fix, let me know

This dose not have a real Google store and trys everything to prevent u from downloading a real Google store you have to download the app called Aurora to spoof your phone to make it seem like you have a different operating system to download capable games to play and not worth the money unless u really Wana play android games and will spend the time to figure out how to download and update games from Google play
That's not correct. It has an official Google store. The apps are tailored for Android TV.

Why on God's green earth do you want to load an official Google Play store app, not optimized for Android TV, onto an Android TV box?

I have the 2017 model and by far it is the best player I had and it is so tempting to just upgrade to this one haha Even though Plex, Jellyfin and Emby not always work with each a/v codec (e.g., Top Gun Maverick with trueHD and h.265) and I have to use Nova or MX player with some videos. Still, one app or another - even 2017 just devours all those newest mkvs

I just upgraded from this to an apple tv 4k. Get the apple tv. The shield is laggy and buggy these days. The apple tv experience is so much better.
Can you run Kodi, Eyepee TV and real debrid on apple TV?
