Love my A6A. Yamaha even doubled the warranty duration a year ago. The only thing I don't like are the "nannies". Theres a significant watts drop per channel when you go from 4 to 5 and higher channels. To be honest with my klipsch 5.1.2 in wall RP pros it doesn't matter since they don't require many watts to get to reference levels. To others it may be an issue. Great AVR. Nice and heavy. Built well. Love the music cast app too. Runs hot but never had a problem yet. 3 hours of lord of rings and runs fine.

Be sure to take a look at the link below prior to pulling the trigger. Good luck.

I know it has preamp outs because I was looking at it a while back. I ended up getting a Denon AVR-X3600H, and I added an Outlaw 5 channel amp for Front Left, Center, Right and 2 rears. I used the Denon amp section for the rest of the surround channel for a 7.4.2 setup. It really works great.

Pulled the trigger on this yesterday, can't wait to get it. I have been eyeing it for a year now. Unfortunately, I don't have a ton of option on which one to buy. As far as I have seen, this is the only one (besides the more expensive a8a) with enough channels for my setup and 3 HDMI 2.1 outputs. Most of the other features are probably overkill, though I will have fun playing with them.

I am replacing my A3000 that died last year. I had wanted this and tried to order when it came out but it was hard to find in stock. Gave up and waited for a deal. $800 off is sweet.

The deal looks to be dead. Back up to regular price. Glad I pulled the trigger earlier today.

I can't see this being sub $1k any time in the near future. At best, I think it would be several years old at that point and outdated. This is by far the cheapest it has been. I honestly don't think it will even go sub &1500 for at least another year+.
Not a chance prices go down anytime soon, The 3 major producers now have a fantastic excuse to keep there prices higher and higher, they now just say it's due to inflation. The chip shortage issue has gotten much better but they are absolutely keeping the prices inflated and until the consumer stops buying them they will keep the prices where they are. I expect these insane prices to last well into next year or until there is a big enough recession where it stops consumers from spending. Gone are the days where you could find a great quality 9.2/11.2 receiver for under $1K! Denon is prob the worst offender in how many times they have jacked up there MSRP's on there receivers! Plus now seeing what the new 3800 is going for Msrp plus the extra $300+ to spend to get Dirac, makes it a joke!

Yamaha makes the best AVRs. I don't know why anyone would prefer another brand?
One reason would be auditioning side by side within my own setup Yamaha did fair well.
Another is YPAO is not that good especially with the low sub output.

Not knowing where you are in the process or budget, here is my take:

If you can I would suggest two pairs of object based speakers.
Significant difference between one and two pairs.
Here is the optimal layout to try to follow, placement is crucial for optimal performance.

https://www.dolby.com/about/suppo...tup-guide/

I would also suggest concentrating on speakers 1st and depending on budget more specifically 5.1.

Object based codecs work off the core surround, having a good one is crucial for optimal performance.

Pre wire for object based speakers and you can add them later.

My $.02 from experience & good luck.
So getting ready to start gutting everything this coming week.

Went in thinking I'd use my old speakers and subs, get a new AVR and TV.

My old HT was a 9.2 (7.2 with 2 height speakers) setup ran off of the SC-57. Fronts were Polk Rti A9, center Polk CSi 5, surrounds Polk FXi A6, and backs and front heights were Polk RTi A4. Had 2 Epic subwoofers that were the dual 15" version. 120" screen and the Epson prolite cinema 4030 series I believe.

Was hoping to be able to use most of those and pair a new center with some in ceiling speakers for an atmos type setup. Rough estimate for usage- 70% movie, 20% PS5, 10% sports from cable.

Old HT was ~17x14. New room is around 14x14 in the basement. No way to expand (used to be a bedroom and has a small closet and bathroom attached at the back, stairs on one side and concrete on the other two sides.)

Going to prewire everything after spray foam is done and rock wool in the ceilings and interior walls to help dampen sound.

Wanted to keep the budget around $5K for that room but can probably go up to around $6,500-$7000

Def tech is running a sell right now and could get the BP-9020 fronts, CS-9060 center, and SR-9040. Heard mixed reviews about the towers and most complain about the amps going bad on the towers. Plus probably wouldn't be able to use the subs on the towers and center already having 2 subs and this just having 2 lines for subs.

Any thoughts on a better setup? I do like the thoughts on this AVR being able to get updates for the future but the lack of Dirac calibration is a negative.

TIA.

If you like the Polk's keep using them.
In that size environment anything more than 5.2.4 would not be optimal IMO.
More speakers doesn't necessarily mean better performance.

If you are able to follow the layout and placement of the link I added, how about keeping LCR's and use the A4's as surrounds.
Then add good front & rear in ceiling speakers.
Hope that helps.

If bass correction is the concern, you can always get a minidsp 2x4 HD and insert it between the receiver and the powered subs (up to 4). Calibrated with a umik and REW, it will give you better result than any AVR's built-in correction.
Kinda agree, this & Audyssey's app & haven't missed Dirac at all!

TBH if you know what you're doing you can easily get away without all this.
Most people wouldn't be able to pick out which is which anyways, that's often been the case for me anyways.

I may stick with those for time being and then can always upgrade in the future.

Any good atmos ceiling speakers you can recommend that would mesh well with the current speakers but give the best sound?

You're right. Link from OP still shows $1649. I had just searched Adorama directly and it shows the regular price. Odd…

The only way to get the price is via the link Adorama and SD have some kind of deal going on i think. It's been that way since the deal launched.

Agreed
Even before 2020 the higher end Yamaha's were not ever highly discounted

Even during the Fry's instore only deals they never had better than a 7.2 yamaha model( A1080?) I think was only 40% off MSRP..versus 50-60% off the Denon( X3500, X4500) and Pioneer( LX701) products

Additionally, the reliability seems to be there with Yamaha and the resale( if you care about that) is high

Having 4 atmos speakers connected to 2 height channels on your 7.2 reciever i imagine would produce inaccurate effects. With this reciever capable of processing 4 height channels is you now open the door to some pretty awesome object based effects that 2 height channel systems cannot achieve. Being able to hear choppers or planes fly over your head is neat, but with 4 height channels the panning effect of those same choppers and planes is so immersive, its really not
something one can put into words and you have to experience for yourself
Correct. At the moment my atmos sound only fades left and right even tho I have 4 atmos speakers. I'm seriously debating dropping $1500+ just to get that front/back atmos fade also 😂
