Anecdotally, I believe the S40 should be installed in high, obscured places (facia boards, trees, etc) and exposed to sunlight from sunrise to sunset, whereas the S120 act as sconces for pathways, entryways and may not get any sunlight after a certain point during the day. I mean, just look at the product link and see the height in which all the sconces are installed. They're either next to or just above the window or door.
