You don't really need to worry about all that - this would be a significant upgrade for you. note this is thinner and lighter than your current laptop. it is not a "pro" model, but if you do not do any "pro" tasks maybe thinner and lighter is better for you.
It really depends how you use the machine and what's important to you. With most Air users, it's primarily a media consumption machine.
If that's you, the extra $200 to get the new M2 machine is worth it. You get a better screen, better speakers, faster processor/gpu, and MagSafe. Ignore the SSD comments. The SSD is not slower for real world usage, and even if it was, the difference isn't something most would notice.
Either machine would probably be a significant improvement from what you have though.
I would say it doesn't support it NATIVELY, but with a simple USB-C or other dongle/dock one can certainly provide to two monitors

Do you have a source that indicates it supports 2 external monitors?

As I said, it won't support it NATIVELY but through a hub or dongle via USB-C one can get more than one up to 3.

Many cheaper hubs can be found on amazon or OWC/Hyper if that's all one wants to do.
No it won't support more than 1 external monitor. I tried. It will display the same image on each monitor if more are plugged in.
It's gotta be a software limitation

Yes and the solution they posted involves installing software (DisplayLink or InstantDock) and using a supported hub. It works.
One just needs to make sure that the hub they buy specifically points out working for M1.

I agree, it feels like an M1 MacBook air for $799 is posted at least once a week on SD for the past year+
SD should just have a master M1 MBA for $799 thread and throw all these posts in there.
