True because most aren't made to get license plates in low lighting or compensate for motion blur.
There's a few good videos from VortexRadar about this. But something is better than nothing.
Agreed, there isn't really any dashcam that can reliably get license plates. It's a matter of motion. There can't be any relative motion between the vehicles for the time of that 1/60 of sec frame. It's a trade off between fps and resolution, and even the current expensive options can't stay cool on a hot dashboard, and take 120 fps at 4k, which is probably at least what it would take to be reliable.
There are some mitigating strategies that may be implemented in the future that may help. I wish these companies would make a software license plate recognition, like facial recognition, that could then focus in on, or take a high resolution still image of a license plate. The other option is a multi image sensor device. None of these are on any dash cams that I know.
The general consensus is that this viofo a119 is as good as the expensive options and at a reasonable price. Go look at LTT video on this. They looked at a lot of dashcams and their consensus was that they all equally sucked. This exact model was their recommendation for bang/buck on the currently available options.

Great camera, great footage, and you can capture license plates clearly during the day.
