At $800 budget, Thinkpad/Elitebook/Latitude are excellent deal for student for the next 4-8 yrs. top class warranty support, easy parts, upgradables. I nick name them light tankpads at work.
At $400, Acer Swift, Asus Zenbook at costco. Less durable than tankpads, expect 2-4 good years for high school.
At $200, Certified used Dell Business Refurbish. Old tech old battery ,but great as a spare laptop and for kids in grade school or broke college students. durable like a washing machine. 20-50% slower.

Always get at least i5/r5 cpu, 16gb ram, 256gb-512gb ssd, 1080p IPS, 1 yr warranty
Avoid Intel atom/Pentium, 128gb ssd, emmc, 720p
Avoid the $250 Gateway/Vaio FE/Lenovo Flex/HP those will fall apart after 1 yr of normal use
Your math is wrong. After rebate it would be $450, not $350.

And the 5 years or less stipulation of the trade-in laptop makes the rebate offer not nearly as good as you think. Most people who have a laptop 5 years or less old will probably value that laptop over $200.
I think so. It'll definitely last 4-5 years at least. And you can upgrade the storage after purchase, if you need more. A 2 TB NVME M.2 2280 would cost $100-150.

I read the trade in page, but I'm a little confused about the 5-year requirement. How do they determine? Official launch date? Date last sold new? Customer "certification" they they've owned 5 years or less? Chip launch date? Seriously, I have no idea...

Manufacturing date..it should be on your the laptop backside..or they will find it through serial

Does anyone have any thoughts on the whole lineup of 14" Ryzen laptops they have now?
There's 2 versions of the Thinkpad, and 2 of the Asus Vivobook

There's the one in the original post,
the higher thinkpad at 750 with a Ryzen 7 Pro 5850U
750$ thinkpad has better cpu.

Vivobooks have the latest gen cpu but then you cannot compare it with thinkpad.

Thinkpad T series are top of the line for business use. Gaming performance might not be great. But they keep going and going. I have 3 thinkpads, one is like 12 years old T60 which is still working fine.

Unless you're over 50, use big fonts, and can't appreciate 2k/4k on a laptop.Peace
