If you have the Best Buy credit card, use code APR24EMOB25 for 10% off, $630 isn't too bad.

This one (Z1 Extreme) is the one to get. Don't get me wrong, the base Z1 seems superb compared to Steam Deck's comparable 512GB version, but damn, the Z1 Extreme is hitting 1080p/120fps in games like Forza and 60fps in RDR2, craziness.

Usually the first batch of YouTube reviews would tend to praise a product at launch as those are from privileged reviewers who receive a free unit from the marketing department of a vendor. I'm waiting for real end user reviews to see if I'd get one myself or invest in upgrading the 64GB SSD on my Steam Deck. If the Ally had a touchpad and ran Steam OS it would be closer to a perfect handheld gaming device, though today's battery tech would still cause concerns to some but it's the same issue no matter which device you pick.

They appear to have corrected in the system, APR24EMOB25 and q2fy24save10pl are no longer "valid for item(s) in your order" Frown
I was actually debating if I should open a BB Credit Card since they offer 10% off on your first purchase but I decided against it. $70 for a credit pull doesnt seem to be worth it. Id rather save that for a big purchase, like a $3000 appliance or tv.

Do they offer 10% off or 10% back in rewards? Back when I applied I bought appliances and got 10% back in rewards

Looks like they removed the discount code with their card. Sucks because I signed up for a card just to use that code.

Sorry, but the promo code apr24emob25 is not eligible with the item(s) in your order.

I guess I still get 10% back in rewards, so not a complete loss I guess.

For those wondering about a hard inquiry on your credit. Do some research, it doesn't really impact your credit score much at all. It would only be an issue if you make frequent hard inquiries. A few a year is nothing.

Hardware is amazing but my main concern as a mobile device is the sleep function on the go. Based on all the reviews I've seen so far - win 11 still sucks compared to Steam OS.
Quote from Digitaltrend here:

"It's a bit like closing the lid on a laptop while playing a game. It should go to sleep, but unless you get in and tweak your power settings, it's hard to know what sleep state the device is in. They aren't consistent either. Several times when using the ROG Ally, I would press the power button to sleep it, only to get caught in a loop of the Windows lock screen popping up, draining the battery."

PCmag here

"The Ally, again, will experience games just like a laptop would—you can lock or sleep the device, but the game is just minimized; it's not as reliable or smooth as the "hard pause" sleep and suspend game features in SteamOS. Everyone knows why few people just turn their PCs off with the games still running. I did try this on the Ally: the device turned the screen off and didn't crash when I signed back in, but the game isn't really suspended (and will likely chew the battery as a result)."

To be fair their proprietary connector for the eGPU allows double iirc the bandwidth of USB4.
The tech is cool, but the price is outrageous. You can buy an entire laptop with a 5980hx and an Rx 6800M for less than the cost of a used 6850M module goes for.

Just wish their compact dock was either user upgradable with MXM or they'd release an egpu enclosure for desktop cards that maintained their connector

Definitely some awesome hardware, but between the Asus software, Windows 11 and no pre-downloadable shaders, I'm just gonna wait on the Steam Deck 2.

Should be mentioned that a 64GB Steamdeck can be upgraded to 512GB for $50 making the Ally a $250 premium (plus the Steamdeck comes with a carrying case) . Also I would miss the Steamdeck's touch pads in certain games. The Ally is definitely better if you want to play more demanding games. I'm glad there is more competition in this space.

Thanks. That one did work. I think that also compounds with the 10% rewards for new cards.

One of the complaints I have with the Steam Deck was the display. Unfortunately, this does not fix that (still not as nice as the Switch's OLED display), but at least some improvements.
