If you have the Best Buy credit card, use code APR24EMOB25 for 10% off, $630 isn't too bad.

This one (Z1 Extreme) is the one to get. Don't get me wrong, the base Z1 seems superb compared to Steam Deck's comparable 512GB version, but damn, the Z1 Extreme is hitting 1080p/120fps in games like Forza and 60fps in RDR2, craziness.

Usually the first batch of YouTube reviews would tend to praise a product at launch as those are from privileged reviewers who receive a free unit from the marketing department of a vendor. I'm waiting for real end user reviews to see if I'd get one myself or invest in upgrading the 64GB SSD on my Steam Deck. If the Ally had a touchpad and ran Steam OS it would be closer to a perfect handheld gaming device, though today's battery tech would still cause concerns to some but it's the same issue no matter which device you pick.

I would pick this over the Steam Deck. I really like my SD, but it doesn't have controller support for Windows unless you use some 3rd party hack. Even with the hacks, a lot of the other buttons are useless. The touchpad is useless as well. I was able to switch between mouse and controller on my GPD Win, but I guess Steam didn't learn anything from them.
I run windows on my SD and at first went through all the different cobbled together hacks to make windows workable... Then I found steam deck tools.... Single app (well kinda 3) but it does it all. Controller support is perfect and the touchpads work just like steamOS.

Battery life seems worrisome from what i seen in the reviews.

I think the reviews were saying that battery life is actually slightly better than the Steam Deck if you run games at the equivalent settings (720p, 60fps cap, etc) since the SoC is more efficient. You just have the option of cranking things up at the expense of battery life.

I was buying Asus products before I was buying Steam products. And my Steam badge says 18 years of service.

Until these things can pump out better battery life they're just expensive gimmicks. Better off using a game streaming service.

No trackpads is a dealbreaker for me. Playing point-and-click, RTS, or other mouse-heavy games with an analog stick is awful.

Also, with all the new information coming out on Asus' shady business practices, I'm putting a hold on supporting them.

Windows will be much nicer to have
Depends on what qualifies as "nicer". Windows has native DirectX and OS libraries for better game compatibility, but at the cost of battery life, heat, and weight. Windows is an inefficient hog, there's no debating that. This ROG is a brute-force way to get closer to native Windows gaming. Fine for a desktop, questionable for a battery powered portable device.

Linux always beats Windows on code efficiency. SteamOS has continued improving its game compatibility. But I get that people run out of patience waiting to play their favorite Windows games.

Linus gave it glowing reviews. What do you think is more likely? His channel is too small so he needs to kiss Asus butt or his channel is big enough that he would likely lose more money and views by not being honest?
Linus is a creep

Just to clarify, this deal is for a computer that functions as a handheld Windows gaming console, not a different version of a Switch. Two completely different things.
That's weird. You drew a lesson from whole cloth as it relates to the comment to which you replied. I'm sure the user understands the difference and there's no need to assume their ignorant.

$700 makes this very tempting.
