If you have the Best Buy credit card, use code APR24EMOB25 for 10% off, $630 isn't too bad.

This one (Z1 Extreme) is the one to get. Don't get me wrong, the base Z1 seems superb compared to Steam Deck's comparable 512GB version, but damn, the Z1 Extreme is hitting 1080p/120fps in games like Forza and 60fps in RDR2, craziness.

Usually the first batch of YouTube reviews would tend to praise a product at launch as those are from privileged reviewers who receive a free unit from the marketing department of a vendor. I'm waiting for real end user reviews to see if I'd get one myself or invest in upgrading the 64GB SSD on my Steam Deck. If the Ally had a touchpad and ran Steam OS it would be closer to a perfect handheld gaming device, though today's battery tech would still cause concerns to some but it's the same issue no matter which device you pick.

I may be an outlier in this bunch, but I almost always have my Deck plugged in when I play, so not really an issue for how I use it.
I do too or atleast have my charger near by bc I'm usually playing Apex and will inevitably have to grab the charger at some point throughout the session

Every Asus laptop I've ever owned overheated like a nuclear reactor. I'll steer clear. Graphics cards are as far as I go.

I don't play game...just curious...is this another type of game console? Is this to compete with the Switch and or ps5 / Xbox?
Pricing is interesting.

I know this is par for the course with the current crop of handhelds but 2 hour battery life really kills this thing. I'm already at about 2.5-3 hour average on my steam deck and it's really the only major complaint I have about the machine. This has arguably worse battery life and isn't that much smaller. In trying to force myself to wait for gen 2

Do 720p and 1080p really make a difference on a 7 inch screen? Fps matters more here and Ally certainly does much better. I still think Steam Deck 64gb + 1tb ssd is a better budget choice for $470, exact 2/3 price of the Ally. If you are going for raw performance, then Ally.

This is gonna die a quick death. Steam has already moved an insane amount of Steam Decks and has a decade of investment and support behind SteamOS. It's a modders delight from a software platform. You can run Windows just fine on it, but really dont need to as you can run just about anything except certain specific anti-cheat software on SteamOS.

These are going to get clearanced out by Black Friday at Best Buy.

Maybe the software has greatly improved but I had nothing but issues getting games to run on Proton and the Windows support on the Steam Deck wasn't there at the time. Between that and the poor quality of the screen I returned mine. I don't know if I really want the ROG either but at least it has Windows and a good screen.

I ended up preferring just streaming my gaming PC to my laptop for a more portable way to play.

I'm going to wait to see if the add suspend-resume to it. That's a huge deal with mobile gaming.

I have had zero problems with playing, well pretty much anything. I dont wander too far off the beaten path, but I've played (and beaten quite a few) the following since January already on my deck. (Had surgery, all while mobile). Didn't have to do anything to get them playing, all played great, looked fantastic.

Spiderman
Spiderman Miles Morales
Doom Eternal
Doom (2016)
Batman AA
Batman AC
Little Nightmares
Shadow of War
CS:GO
FO:4
NoMan's Sky

Also loaded Windows, (easy) and decided to go back to SteamOS. It's just slicker and more streamlined and lacks all of the mess Windows brings just to game.

Yes it is you have to have. Best Buy card I just used it!
Yep - only works if you're using a BB CC. Someone was going through early in the comments and TDing all the ones saying the 10% code worked. Sorry whoever that was, but as with most coupons, there are requirements. This one you just gotta use the BB card.

There are only a handful of games that actually play better on steamOS than windows... The vast majority run equal or better on windows. I don't disagree with your characterization of windows but these games are just developed for windows. At least that has been my experience with the two OS's. Although I can guarantee I will set up a dual boot to test out halo ISO or an eventual steam Os for non steam decks.
I wish I could disagree, but you're spot on. I tried Windows 11 on my SD and most games ran MUCH better than on SteamOS. The reason I went back to SteamOS is because of the intuitive gaming mode that was clearly made specifically for that hardware. Hopefully the Ally's ArmoryCrate truly does the same thing but on Windows. Even with the innovations on Proton and Wine, unless games either are coded for Linux or they fully support a more open graphics API (Vulkan), there's always going to be a performance hit of some kind. Now maybe with these Zen 4 APUs, that overhead cost could be barely noticeable... but a DirectX game is almost always gonna run better natively on Windows.

What's the hype? If you re true gamer get a pc or steam deck for emulators . Nothing between. $699 for that little 120hz tiny screen you guys wont be able to tell the diff .
120hz is the same no matter the size WTF. The extreme should be able to hit 120hz on older games, and lightweight titles depending on settings.
