If you have the Best Buy credit card, use code APR24EMOB25 for 10% off, $630 isn't too bad.

This one (Z1 Extreme) is the one to get. Don't get me wrong, the base Z1 seems superb compared to Steam Deck's comparable 512GB version, but damn, the Z1 Extreme is hitting 1080p/120fps in games like Forza and 60fps in RDR2, craziness.

Usually the first batch of YouTube reviews would tend to praise a product at launch as those are from privileged reviewers who receive a free unit from the marketing department of a vendor. I'm waiting for real end user reviews to see if I'd get one myself or invest in upgrading the 64GB SSD on my Steam Deck. If the Ally had a touchpad and ran Steam OS it would be closer to a perfect handheld gaming device, though today's battery tech would still cause concerns to some but it's the same issue no matter which device you pick.

How do they arrive at a $700+ value for these? Seems like they're just playing off of the steam deck hype.

Pre-ordered this morning, but will make my decision when more reviews are out. The Steam Deck has been great, but not being able to play all the games I want (like Destiny or maybe even Diablo) has made it less attractive to me.
What causes Diablo to not be playable on Steam Deck?

I've personally had a great experience with my steam deck. That said, almost every game I've played with it was in my steam library, and worst I had to do was side load a newer version of proton.

I can definitely see the allure of this device and may pick one up a few months after launch. Given Asus track record lately, I just want to see how well they handle support and bug fixes.

I feel there's still quite a market for both of these considering steam still hits that 399 price point on the lower end (that one plus a 512gb m.2 upgrade for around 50 bucks and you're winning value wise).

Only up to 2 hours battery life, one review website gave battery estimates for Witcher 3.
Be prepared to make a return trip to your Best Buy

Turbo Mode (57 mins) at 30% brightness
Performance Mode (1hr 47 mins) at 30% brightness
And all for only $700.

I said maybe because the beta worked but it's still the beta. Won't know for sure how it plays until release.

Awesome! Another item bought to be used as a paperweight because you're old now with kids but has spare money and no time to clear your game backlog.

It's good to have concerns and a healthy dosage of doubt but some of you guys really are stretching. I don't think I've seen a review yet that does not point out the issues with the Ally. Taken as a whole, the overwhelming response is positive. This isn't some conspiracy guys. Asus' lawyers are not handing suitcases of money to reviewers (or the equivalent of some sort). Maybe the positive reviews are because they view the device favorably. I don't understand why that can't be a possibility.
If you don't believe all these major companies don't pay and or give $$$$ in free product to all big reviewers for YT, Twitch etc to buy biased reviews you aren't paying attention. Even SD has threads full of shill bots built for the purpose of promoting group think buys.

And when video playback become equivalent to gaming?
I never stated that video playback is the same as gaming, but this is good information. But since you've challenged me, video playback is equivalent to gaming when you are playing your games off the cloud via xbox, nvidia geforce now, amazon luna, etc.
