You can just get a Minisforum mini PC for $579 (now $506 - see below). Comes with the latest AMD Ryzen 7 7735HS, 32GB DDR5, 1TB NVMe 4.0 SSD, Triple 4K display out, a ton of USB ports, including a USB4 port. It even comes with a Windows 11 Pro license.

Unless you really need a Mac, I'd go with the above. Much better machine for almost the same price. You can the same specs from other manufacturers for even less, but Minisforum is a well known brand in the mini PC scene.

Edit: As another user kindly pointed out, the Minisforum PC I listed above is just $506 with coupon now. absolutely insane deal for so much power in such a small package.

Same price at Costco so a slightly better deal if you have membership since they extend the warranty for an extra year.

Well...they made a Mac Pro if your wife is truly a professional.

This is for consumers, and it does a great job for consumers. If your wife is using your devices for work or beyond normal academia purposes, such a product like this is not meant for your wife.

Not knowing what your wife does for a living/pleasure, I can only comment with this: a large percentage of users have zero issues with this base model. It is however, a BASE model. Powerful, but still a base. Just like you shouldn't skimp on good socks if you're an outdoors person, you shouldn't skimp on a good device if it's your job and livelihood to work on it. You feel me?
Exactly. I got an Open Box one from MicroCenter for $425. Felt like it was worth it just to dabble in Mac OS lol. Considering I own everything else from Apple.

No idea why people would thumbs down this comment, lol. Everything should be upgradable and repairable these days. Just common sense.
Fanboys thumb down anything negative when it comes to apple. They do make some nice stuff when you go premium but low tier stuff is terrible and yes I have used similar specked Mac minis and while I have no experience with the mini windows PC that was discussed earlier I'm sure it can run circles around this. There's a reason apple makes a ridiculous amount of profits on its hardware vs other oem's.

This what I need if my use case requires as quiet as possible operation?
It's essentially silent, but if your primary requirement is "as quiet as possible" then a MacBook Air wins due to passive cooling rather than active.

I got one of these (8GB RAM, 256GB SSD) a few months ago when it was the same price , and I've loved it. It's extremely quick, and I've had no issue whatsoever with RAM, programs loading and running, etc. Granted, I'm not doing any heavy gaming, video editing, music creation, etc., but for basic needs, this is more than capable. I was worried about the principal of just 8GB ram (my old 2012 Mini has the same amount), but this machine just operates differently.

I had an Amazon GC and already have a monitor, so at that price, this was a really great purchase for my needs.
It does not operate differently with regard to storing data in RAM. Your initial response was correct that this 2023 model cannot store more than your 2012 model in RAM. All you've proven is that your workflow seems to fit acceptably under that low threshold.

Choke. Really? Choke huh? This doesn't run windows and carry 30 years of services code for backwards compatibility, like WNS and NTLM along with MS bloat.

I've had soo many tabs open on my m1 mba I didn't know which tab was what after a while.
You'd be able to open just as many tabs on a similarly spec'd Windows PC. Disk caching to compensate for memory pressure isn't some Apple exclusive.

You don't need to be a "professional" to have a workflow that requires more than 8GB of RAM.

Another silly comment without any real experience using such a machine.
Go ahead and point out specifically what you think is incorrect then.

how this compare to NVIDIA SHIELD pro?
It's far less portable and has the worst battery life possible.

To put the 8GB RAM capacity into perspective for non-technical people, this desktop computer has the same amount of RAM as an iPad Air and a little more than an iPhone.

The 8GB criticism is not so much about if it can handle tons of Chrome and Safari tabs, but more so about if Apple is being shamelessly stingy with the upgrade tier costs, especially with DDR4 prices tanking

If you need a keyboard/mouse and screen then M1 Air for $799 may be a better deal.

Magic KB +89
Track Pad +89
Screen - let's just say it's worth $122 which is too cheap.

You get similar spec computer (I know M2 is faster than M1 ~18%) but shouldn't matter. M2 Air price is still too high compared to M2 Mac Mini $499 to make it worth so I'm using M1 Air as comparison.

And you can CARRY the laptop out of the house.
If you need ports, one of those usb-c ports replicator is just $30.

I find an Air infinitely more useful than just a base Mac Mini especially when you consider the costs of the add-ons you need to run a Mac Mini (unless you already have the peripherals or want to use say PC keyboards or other mouse).

I have the 8GB M1 and there's excessive memory swapping according to the log (it uses the SSD as RAM because 8GB isn't enough). After only ~4 months of light use, the health check thing says I have used 8% of my SSD's expected lifespan.
