Predominantly for looks. The heat will go straight up, so either you have to be incredibly close or have something like a gazeebo to trap some of the heat, although that seems like a bad idea as well.

It's not super warm, from ownership, but it's okay as long as it's mid 50s - it's really a cool spring / summer night fire pit don't expect warmth in fall or winter
