1) The firmware update is necessary (see here [pcgamer.com]) but painless. Download Samsung Magician. There will be an option to update firmware in the software. Takes a few minutes at most.

Edit: Since I'm getting criticism for "misinformation" I should add that since the problem was discovered in Jan/Feb 2023, it's likely Samsung has already loaded its new stock with the latest firmware that shouldn't require updating, but it doesn't hurt to check to see if you might need a firmware update, especially if you happen to receive older stock. The manufacture date should be listed on the box (see below) but regardless of the manufacture date it's best to be proactive and check your firmware. It just takes a minute or two.

2) For cloning, I highly recommend Macrium Reflect. It's free and can clone your current 512gb drive to your new 2tb drive (use a USB enclosure like this one [amazon.com]) even though the sizes are different. It makes the upgrade/transition seamless and painless. Just clone your drive and pop the new drive in. No need to reinstall Windows and start over from scratch. And with the enclosure you can still make use of your old drive as an external drive.

I had the firmware issue that killed my drive. I bought another one so I could get back to work and try to see if I could recover the old one. Had to get an HD in and install Windows to use the Samsung tool to confirm the issue and try to update the firmware to recover. Couldn't update the firmware on the old drive but I could on the new drive. My new drive died yesterday. I can't confirm it's the same issue that leaves the hard drive in a permanent read only mode. Not until I can boot my system into a Windows install that I can install the Samsung tool on. But farking buyer beware. That the first issue was ever a problem is already unacceptable.
wth you bought another one. lol

No, I doubt that Best Buy would match an unadvertised price, especially one that's only available with a special membership requirement. When you're going through the check out process you can select in-store pickup at Best Buy instead of shipping to your house.

Hmm. $90 is cheaper than a lot of other higher end "stick it and use it" products. Big Grin laugh out loud
What other stick it and use it products?

Not him but I don't have a one strike and you're out policy. I trust Samsung SSDs for their reliability and they will have to do a lot worse to change my mind.

My mistake, forgot I bought a 990 and the issue did happen to be something else that I could recover from. Sorry for the misinformation.

Update: I got mine and the sticker on the SSD showed a 2023.04 build date. I put it in an ACASIS enclosure and hooked it up to my laptop.

I ran CrystalDiskInfo and firmware version shows as 5B2QGXA7. No update needed. 👍

I can't confirm it, but I believe the issue was I didn't screw down the new SSD, which was supposed to be temporary while I waited for a post to arrive in the mail. Stuff happened / excuses, and I left the drive working that way for nearly a month. With the weight of a heat sink and me tossing my headphones on the PC multiple times daily, I suspect I vibrated it out of place under its own weight. I screwed it down and did a SMART scan on the drive with Samsung tools and everything came up good and has been fine for a day.
