Should've used Macrium to begin with. It's a better software all around. The only thing worth using Samsung Magician for is updating firmware. I update firmware on a new drive, then uninstall the software.

I've bought a ton of Samsung drives with the expectation that I could clone replacements using the Magician software and an external enclosure. For my latest drive this didn't work. Samsung support told me my no-name enclosure didn't work, but a Sabrent enclosure would. Nope.

So, I'll need to use Macrium, just like with every other drive. After a dozen or so Samsung drives I'm done with them.

That is weird, so a 980 pro worked with your external drive and another 980 pro didn't for unknown reasons?

I think magician you need samsung drive to samsung drive and it can't be any other brand drive.

I used a random Ugreen enclosure and macrium to clone to a 980 pro 2TB

980 is meh. Got the 990 2TB for $143 (before taxes). Nah bro, 990 or bust. Haters, flat Earthers, flyover states residers… please down vote my post.

Got a time machine? While I agree the 990 Pro for $14 more might be worth it to some, that deal isn't available anymore. Not to mention, until Direct Storage is finally implemented into games, the speed difference will be negligible for the vast majority of users. Hell, even a SATA drive won't be noticeably slower for most users, unless they're doing heavy professional work or regularly transferring large files between drives.

Truth be told. 980 is still a solid option.

Yeah, they seem to be dragging their feet.

The last I've heard was during the original announcement for the 990 Pro that the 4TB would release sometime in early 2023. That ship has sailed, and Samsung is pretty bad with keeping customers in the loop. It was obviously delayed, but as far as I know, Samsung has been silent. Samsung has a huge excess of SSD components do to massively increasing production during the pandemic. My guess is they don't want to cannibalize sales of all the excess 2TB drives they have by releasing the 4TB.

Which one is cooler? 980 or 990? Thanks

It was a previous deal on Samsung.com with discount code applied. No Time Machine to travel back and buy. Anyhow, both the 980 and 990 are very good options.
